In unflinching detail, the horrific second installment in Cross's controversial Dragon Temple trilogy (after Touched by Venom) chronicles 17-year-old Zarq's struggles to attain her destiny as the Skykeeper's Daughter. Zarq faces the oppression of a brutal Taliban-like theocratic dictatorship and her own addiction to dragon venom as she undergoes a brutal apprenticeship to the Dragonmaster of Clutch Re. Zarq hopes to change her oppressive patriarchal society by becoming a dragonmaster herself, despite the violent opposition she faces—and the demands of her dead mother's dragon "haunt" to search for her long-lost sister, Waivia, instead of completing the apprenticeship. Cross's anguished protagonist faces grim issues that might make some fantasy enthusiasts uncomfortable—addiction, genital mutilation, rape, slavery, racism, bestiality and prostitution, to name a few. Warning: these are not McCaffrey dragons. Think X-rated Tolkien set in the Middle East. (Aug.)

The saga continues
By rainsong
Whatever flaws TBV had, are not found in Shadowed by Wings, its much more polished, much less graphic in its portrayal of violence (so if thats what you're looking for, you will be disappointed!!), the flow of the action/adventure more well-paced, and the story unfolds with some answers, particularly concerning the politics of Malacar. From SFRevu, Review of 'Touched by Venom' by Gayle Surrette:"Zarq .. doesn't observe or ask questions about what goes on around her. As the clan and her family are torn apart she simply watches with all the innocence of a young child. For most of this book, Zarq steps back from taking responsibility for her own life and lets passion, revenge, and anger rule her choices......I found myself ...to really want to sit Zarq down and let her have it, with her aloofness and stubbornness."

I agree with this portrayal of Zarq the whiny child in TBV - but that child has grown and mostly gone by the end of 'Shadowed by Wings', Zarq at 17/18 is a much wiser, mature young woman, her character far more fully developed than in TBV, as we witness the birth of a political revolutionary leader, where the Personal is indeed the Political. A much more satisfying ending than TBV too.... the final installment can't be published quick enough for me!

violent XXX fantasy saga
By A Customer
Seventeen years old Zarq believes it is her destiny as the Skykeeper's Daughter to become a dragonmaster. However, the Keepers of the Dragon Temple reject her request; insisting no woman has ever been or shall be a dragonmaster. She is warned to drop her pursuit or face dire consequences though she endures an abusive apprenticeship including rape and mutilation by the Dragonmaster of Clutch Re headed by Overlord Waikar Re Kratt.

While her peers treat her with contempt, Zarq searches for allegedly lost ancient documents that will prove a woman could be a Dragonmaster. If she succeeds in finding the document she would still face certain death of heresy or worse cold turkey withdrawal from dragon venom that's she is addicted to while they lock her away. Adding to her pressure is her late mother's dragon demands she search for her missing sister, Waivia, instead of completing an apprenticeship that will at the end still not achieve her dream of becoming one with the dragons.

This is not for everyone as Janine Cross is vividly descriptive with the trials and tribulations that assault the young heroine as she bucks the enforced order of the Taliban like Dragon Temple. Definitely not for a weak stomach with scenes of rape, genital and other bodily mutilations, and sexual slavery that make Zarq's dragon venom addiction, forced prostitution and even bestiality, seem mild. Well written, SHADOWED FOR WINGS is a violent XXX fantasy saga that provides a radically different look at a dragon based society than the heroic thread eaters of Pern.

good, but a difficult read
By Sadie Forsythe
I wasn't sure I was going to bother reviewing the second and third book in this series. I just wasn't sure what I'd say. I liked the book? I hated the book? These books left me reeling, cringing, demoralised and strangely vitalised at the same time? How does one express that?

In reading others' reviews, I sense I'm not the only person struggling to find the appropriate balance. I see a lot of middling reviews, indicative of a lot of emotionally confused readers. I can completely relate. That's where this book shoves its reader, right into the middle on 'how should I feel about that?' The problem is that while it's occasionally obvious, a lot of time it isn't. Not because the things that happen aren't horrid and denounce-able in the extreme, but because so many really, really bad things happen that some bad things just don't seem to rise to level of atrocity anymore (even though in isolation that would definitely be). It's rare for a book to transport a reader there.

A major theme of this book (these books) is the abuse of the powerless by the powerful and its amazing ability to remain socially invisible to otherwise good people. As an outsider it's hard to imagine how it's rationalised, but it is...everyday. Here, it's just made a little more obvious. We deal with a strict caste system, a violent patriarchy that allows women NO influence in their own lives, slavery, the marginalization of a native populace by a conquering people and the resulting institutionalised racism, economic entrapment, social stigmatisation, a dangerous and far reaching religious organisation, and a ruling class that can no longer understands their duty, blinded as they are by their perceived superiority. This leaves a lot of powerless people, many powerless on numerous fronts, and a myriad of ways for victims to be victimised...traumatised.

In the middle of all this is Zarq, a young powerless woman who trips along and by dint of simply surviving the MANY horrors of her own life and being the right person in the right place at the right time manages to almost accidentally start a revolution. (Ah, the transformative power of even one person willing to sacrifice their all for the greater good!) And she does survive and witness horrors. Thus, the reader deals with them too. Beyond just the basic hardships of poverty and austerity (she spent 10 years in a remote convent as a child) there's kidnappings, rapes, battles, betrayal, attempted assassinations, loss and pitifully few moments of relief. It's all hard on the readers psyche.

The book also treats sex as amazingly mutable. I actually really liked this about it, but we all know sex can tie people in knots faster that just about anything. We deal with consensual and non-consensual (a lot of the latter, though blessedly vague on details) sex of both the hetero- and homosexual (both M & F) variety (In fact, this is the clearest case of institutionalised rape I've ever seen in a book), incest, pedophilia, and even beastiality (though there's no interspecies penis/vagina contact). I can readily imagine a whole host of readers being put off by any one of those, let alone all of them in one text.

So in the end I'm left wondering what I thought of Shadowed by Wings. I certainly didn't enjoy reading it, but having finished it, I'm really glad to have read it. I recommend others do the same.
