Homa Garemani is an author, poet, and translator, born and raised in Iran. She studied languages and comparative literature at Tehran University and abroad. Her other publications include translation of Light on the Path to Persian, Fortress of the Golden Dragon, and her English poems Tales of Turning Points. She has lived in California since 1976.

"My name and my words will be told among the lovers, centuries after my death," so said the great Persian poet Rumi seven centuries ago. As a matter of fact, his monumental oeuvre has been passed on by successive generations and his name has been synonymous with Altruism, UNITY, and LOVE.
In every age, we humans have to acknowledge and deal with our innate spiritual nature as well as our individual and collective demons our fears produce. Time and again we face old as well as some new formidable issues which seriously challenge progress and indeed our very own survival. Fortunately, we can be guided by a few timeless beacons to help us navigate in this total darkness.
We form our world by what we bring into it in terms of our mental models and activities and the world forms and shapes up accordingly. Since the dawn of civilization due to rise of human consciousness we have sought answers to questions germane to Life's Meaning. This we have done through our particular culture ,mostly unconsciously and extremely rarely on our own volition and initiative. Answers to the grand question of "Why" have served as fulcrum which Life's Meaning hinges on. These Meanings affect our sense of right and wrong, our relations in the world at large, our very survival as a species and possible outcomes after our inevitable and irrefutable physical death.
At least in the West, our Sources of Meaning, roughly in the order of their first time appearance, have been Myths, Philosophy, and Science requiring various mixes of pure faith all the way to experimentally verifiable and logic based "objective" facts. As a rule these sources, existing more or less simultaneously, provide their specific answers to questions " What Do We Know?", and "How Do We Know?" only partially and inadequately for today's Post Modern Man.
To the modern scientific mind the universe has no intrinsic meaning, direction, end or purpose yet as active agents we need Meaning to live on fully. If the universe is cold, lifeless, and without intrinsic values, then any meaning that exists is the meaning that we create. The necessity of creating meaning without appeal of universal values or divine purpose is both a great liberation and an enormous existential burden. Admittedly, science can not deal with what makes life hum, including Beauty, Values, and LOVE and ostensibly our organized myths (religious institutions) have failed us miserably.
The Post Modern Man is faced with his unique myriad of challenges, both personal as well as societal. These include various old and lingering types of discrimination and inequalities in income, opportunities, all predicated on race, gender, sexual orientation, along with constant wars of aggression with unprecedented levels of deaths and destruction.The new and more formidable challenges include global warming due to large human environmental footprint, rise of consumerism leading to a sense of nihilism, and technological impact of living all ALONE TOGETHER under the illusion of companionship.
Our classic Sources of Meaning have served us well and made us develop from tribal, to traditional, to modern to post-modern levels of human development. However, our present pluralistic world view has ended up completely fragmented, alienated, shrouded in nihilism, irony, and meaninglessness.
Today, we stand at the brink of the next phase, from post-modern to Integral Phase and hopefully well beyond. This is where Rumi with his extraordinary message of unquestionable UNITY and Universal LOVE shines brilliantly and magically through his poetry in the dark hours of search.
Since our post-modern meanings, formulated by our values through culture, society and society's institution have failed and are ofttimes are in competition with each other for limited societal resources, yet they are conservative by design any hope for ushering necessary changes will only actualize through active mass participation of the individuals. In our next stage, the Integral Phase, a truly integrated, cohesive world view can finally emerge.
The individually unique road for the traveler will require a complete paradigm shift in the way reality is perceived. He will have to adopt a SINGLE FORMLESS reality as opposed to the present pluralistic myriads of FORMS.
An easy way to differentiate FORM and FORMLESS awareness is that the FORM is what one sees, the objects of sight, and FORMLESS awareness is what sees the objects, the seeing itself. Again, having our back to the sun as the unknown sole source of light we only see objects in front and they all seem real and their sum total constitutes our physical reality. However, if we turn around, as Rumi and his fellow travelers experientially did, we will notice that in the absence of light from the sun (FORMLESS) objects (FORMS) cease to exist and disappear.
With the new reality time and distance which cause Separation are still necessary for our physical navigation but will become a great impediment to our progress when applied to human emotions, relations and mental concepts. This is somewhat analogous to how behavior of a sub-particle is modeled in Quantum Physics; it is not created until it is observed, at which time it is formed. Before it is observed, it can best be described as a potential, not a discrete object, and the act of observation, consciousness, determines its state.
Unfortunately, the Western culture has made the paradigm shift of focus from FORMS to FORMLESS an austerity rather than virtue, a contraction rather than growth, stagnation rather than Creativity, and sadness rather than joy. Rumi and some of his fellow travelers on their individual spiritual and self-awakening road joined the wine bearer, celebrating along with a sweet string playing sweet LOVE songs, clapping, singing and dancing to ecstasy to their Heart's content knowing well that Heart is our FORMLESS awareness.
Our Heart manifests itself as the center of stillness with qualities such as patience, kindness, appreciation, compassion, altruism, generosity and LOVE.The new paradigm of the Heart is the living expression of the wise view of Non-separation. LOVE is how life expresses itself within the paradigm of Non-separation which makes the Lover and the Beloved to become identical and inseparable.
Rumi's Garden of Love has many flowers all flourishing and evergreen, because it is irrigated by the Waters of Life. In praise of the FORMLESS these flowers are magical, act as love potion and transform the human soul to gold.
Rumi's Love Flowers heal the old paradigm's schizoid classification noting that Lust or libido, love to create and to procreate or Eros, friendship or Philia, love devoted to the welfare of the others, Agape, are all human manifestations of the prototype LOVE of the FORMLESS.

Timeless Rumi, Beautifully Translated

Who doesn't love Rumi? A prolific philosopher, Sufi mystic, scholar and poet...his musings are still as deep, meaningful and profound today as they were when he wrote them 800 years ago. Homa Garemani has done his work absolute justice by translating it in the hyperbolic manner in which it was intended. It is not easy to translate from a language that expresses itself in such a dramatic way. It is beautifully written. Thank you for sharing this beautiful prose with those of us who don't read Farsi. Bravo!
