About the Author
Marie Clay, FRSNZ, FNZPsS, FNZEI(Hon),Emeritus Professor, taught in primary schools and then at the University of Auckland where, for the next 30 years she introduced educational psychologists to ways of preventing psychological problems. She did post-graduate study in Developmental Psychology at the University of Minnesota on a Fulbright Scholarship and completed her doctorate at the University of Auckland with a thesis entitled "Emergent Literacy." Her 'Reading (and writing) Recovery' is an early literacy intervention, which is now implemented in five countries, and three languages. Literacy Lessons Designed For Individuals integrates what has been learned from that innovation with new research and theoretical advocacies. Shifts in early literacy learning can be monitored by teachers using her Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement in English, Spanish and French. A series of individual lessons can be delivered in those languages to about 150,000 children worldwide annually using a guidebook called Reading Recovery: Guidelines for Teachers in Training. Literacy Lessons Designed for Individuals is a similar guidebook which aims to make accelerated progress possible for a wider range of problems. Marie Clay was past-President of the International Reading Association, served on the editorial committees of professional journals, was a research consultant at home and abroad including UNESCO, chaired a Social Science Research Committee advising government on policies and research allocations, and worked internationally with problem-solving related to early intervention research and practice.

This book is designed for use with an observation survey determining a child's reading readiness and his/her concepts about print. Some pages have the words in strange order, some pages are upside-down, and so on, although superficially it looks like a "normal" book. It is illustrated and has big type, the illustrations facing the type pages. In line with the California Reading Initiative and the assembly bills requiring informed diagnosis of children's reading readiness and progress, and multiple assessments thereof, this is a valuable diagnostic tool for children entering school, to be used with the test script on page 47-48 of Marie Clay's An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement.

I highly recommend this items for teachers of elementary students. I am a kindergarten teacher and use this book to assess my students' knowledge of Concepts of Print. This book makes it so easy to assess these skills in younger children.

"20:30 Therefore Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; 20:31 but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name."
So why were these seven signs chosen by John, who perhaps knew Jesus better than anyone while He was walking the earth? It is the aim of this book to answer this question.

STRONG CONCLUSION TO THE GRAPHIC ADAPTATION

The graphic novel adaptation of R.A. Salvatore's monumental Dark Elf Trilogy comes to an exciting conclusion in Sojourn from Devil's Due Publishing. Drizzt Do'Urden has fled from his home deep under the surface with his faithful companion Guenhwyvar, the magical black panther, always on the run from his Drow who wish to kill him. Despite the sun weakening him, Drizzt cannot help but stare at each new dawn in his strange new world. He comes upon a village of peaceful farmers, observing them from afar, and even killing the Gnolls who want his aid in attacking the small settlement.

But when a family of farmers is murdered, Drizzt is blamed sending a vengeful hunter named McGristle on his trail. Drizzt slays the real killers, two Barghests from the lower planes but finds himself on the run from McGristle, and a party of adventurers led by the Ranger Dove Falconhand. When Drizzt aids them in battle against a group of stone giants, Dover realizes that Drizzt is a friend and ends the search for him. McGristle, though, is driven by hatred and presses on, trailing Drizzt all across the Forgotten Realms. Will Drizzt ever find acceptance in a world that is conditioned to believe that all Drow are evil?

Devil's Due sparkles with the final part of Salvatore's trilogy. One of the main themes of his story was that pall of isolationism. Drizzt is not only an outcast among his own kind, but he's an outcast among all kind. He's constantly harassed and driven away by those who fear him for no good reason often times other than the (much deserved) evil reputation of the Drow. Andrew Dabb's script does a great job of keeping this a focal point of the tale.

The pencils of Tim Seeley, a great team of inkers, and colors by Blond are once again a strong point to the book. Outside of the confines of the Underdark the artists are given a little more freedom to open up their expanse and create a more vivid and rich setting for Drizzt. Fans will be happy to know that Drizzt's adventures will continue in The Crystal Shard and Devil's Due will be presenting more of Salvatore's work with their adaptation of his DemonWars series. Devil's Due pulled off another great win!

Excellent artwork brings the old story to new heights

The artwork of this third installment of the Legend of Drizzt graphic novels brings the story to life like never before. Without the restrictions of the gloomy and drab Underdark, the artists have much more freedom with lighting, weather, and color than in the previous two books.

As Drizzt leaves the Underdark and ventures forth into a strange new world, he finds that life will not be as peaceful as he had hoped. With good reason most people distrust and fear drow elves and Drizzt realizes he is going to have a hard time finding a home. As Roddy McGristle tracks him over countless leagues, Drizzt learns quickly of the cruelty frequently encountered in the world. He does however find a companion in the old Ranger Montolio Debrouchee. We also meet Cattie-brie and Bruenor Battlehammer for the first time in this volume.

A story of new beginnings for Drizzt, adapted in a beautiful way that is sure to please.

Sojourn - perfect!

Credit where credit is due - this comic book version of the legendary Drizzt novels is outstanding. The detail and perfect capture of the key elements of the novel made this version as exciting a read as the first time I read the novels.

I would highly recommend the comic book version to all dedicated Drizzt fans.

Brilliant

When Grace's daughter Lotte walks onto the street in front of a car she's being saved by Melody. Melody has a son, Skip, who's Lotte's age. Because she's so relieved Grace invites both Melody and the driver of the car, Eddy, for dinner. Grace and her husband are both hardworking people who don't like their jobs, but they are slaving away to be able to afford their mortgage. Melody is a hippy, a single mother who has just left a community. Eddy's a risk analyst who only has one goal in life and that is to marry his girlfriend Romy. She's unfaithful to him and isn't very keen. Because of the accident the paths of Grace, Melody and Eddy cross and then things start evolving and there's no turning back...

Grace, Melody and Eddy are all very different, but friendships are being formed. That is something I loved about The Near Miss. They're all struggling. Grace because her husband wants to be an inventor. He has done it before and wants to quit his job again to works on projects he loves. Only Grace is afraid that won't pay the bills. Skip and Lotte become good friends, they're an unlikely duo, but they get along wonderfully. Melody's main worry is money. How will she be able to pay the rent and where will the food on her table come from? Eddy is unlucky in love. He wants to keep Romy whatever it takes, but she doesn't want to be kept. All of these stories work. They're interesting, they're fascinating and moving from time to time as well. I couldn't put this book down and loved it from the first page.

A Near Miss is a story with several main characters. I liked that angle. They all have good and bad sides and Fran Cusworth is not afraid of showing them. I think that's a huge strength. It made me love this story even more. It's honest and it's realistic while it's also clearly fiction at the same time, a good combination. Especially since Fran Cusworth knows how to keep her balance. The story is wonderfully chaotic and so much is happening that it sometimes made my head spin, which is something I loved. It's fast-paced, but the story is also easy to follow. I can't express how much I enjoyed reading The Near Miss. it's absolutely brilliant.

Quietly exceptional

The Near Miss is the story of a group of people in Melbourne Australia that come together after Melody, a refugee from a Nimbin commune, saves a little girl from being run over by a car. The child’s mother invites Melody, her son, and the man that drove them all to the hospital over for a thankyou dinner along with their significant others, and this sets off a chain of interconnected events that see relationships break and new ones form, jobs lost and found, and realisations discovered.

At one point while reading, it crossed my mind that the characters in this story were either neurotic or dull witted or both, and for a while there, I felt it wasn’t going anywhere. I soon realised however, that Melody was the key. Not only was she the one character with a positive, and somewhat enlightened view of the world, but she also ended up being the one that provided the depth to the story that I feared might be missing. Her kindness and willingness to put herself out for the sake of others without asking anything in return had a kind of healing effect on the people around her.

I loved the writing style, particularly when it crossed the line into magical realism. This is a very talented author with a strong and relevant voice. Though it sometimes felt as if little was happening, by the end of the book I felt as if I’d read something quite exceptional.

Now this book takes it to a whole different level.. When I started reading and getting into the book really good, I was swept deeper into the story and characters, amazing at how the author wrote this book, which is hard to explain if you haven't read this book yet. The writing style is pretty humorous but yet a serious feel with the lives of the characters. The lives are so different and when they all come together...well... I suggest you grab a copy of this book!
