Unique and powerful peak performance book

As a business psychologist I've done a lot of reading on the psychology of peak performance. This book stands out because of the author's unique background and perspective. An athlete himself and performance coach to athletes ranging from inner city youth to professional athletes, his experience is based on real world results.

Unlike many areas in which we strive to be successful, sports have clearly defined metrics of success. You win or you lose. And if you lose it's often by a matter of fractions of seconds. The fact that he's helped athletes win in highly competitive sports captured my attention.

Athletes train for years, perhaps their whole lives, to win in their sports, and when they are "on" the pressure is certainly on... to a level that most of us have never experienced.

What are these athletes doing to get in the zone and perform at their best despite INTENSE pressure?

I was pleased to see that the author answered this question-- what they do, he explains, is build up their mental toughness, before, during, and after their athletic performances.

With many engaging examples and discussions, he boils the how (to build mental toughness) down to 3 main points and shares specific ways to develop each.

Peak performers of all types:

1) Are aligned with what's most important to them (which ironically is NOT the outcome of the performance).
2) Have winning routines and ways to manage their anxiety and energy
3) Know how to be poised, fully present, and focused in the moment

In today's economy, mental toughness is of paramount importance. It is easy for stress and anxiety to take over, making us less confident and unfocused, and preventing us from performing at our best. This book is particularly relevant today yet the skills are timeless. I can imagine using the same skills 20 years from now.

If you're interested in learning how to have more poise and less mental stress, even in high pressure performance situations, I highly recommend this book.

What's so great about Inner Excellence is that it's applicable to absolutely everyone. Not only can athletes or business people greatly benefit from Jim's teachings, but so too can anyone else who wants to live an amazing and fullfilling life.

Jim has acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience throughout his life and he's sharing it all with us in this book. By analyzing previously secret archival documents, obscure objects, and political pamphlets, Daniel Leese traces the tumultuous history of the cult within the Communist Party and at the grassroots level. The Party leadership's original intention was to develop a prominent brand symbol, which would compete with the nationalists' elevation of Chiang Kai-shek. They did not, however, anticipate that Mao would use this symbolic power to mobilize Chinese youth to rebel against party bureaucracy itself. The result was anarchy, and when the army was called in, it relied on mandatory rituals of worship, such as daily reading of the Little Red Book or performances of 'the loyalty dance', to restore order. Such fascinating detail sheds light not only on the personality cult of Mao, but also on hero-worship in other traditions.

A must read on the Cultural Revolution

Cultural Revolution rarely makes for dull reading, so packed it is with political twists, hidden plots, mass hysteria and jaw-dropping absurdities. Leese's exploration of Mao's personality cult is a wonderful addition to the genre. Based on extensive archival research in the PRC, and on careful examination of Maoist propaganda, this book accounts for the development of Mao worship from the late 1930s, through the trials of de-Stalinization in the 1950s and the excesses of the 1960s, until the cult was toned down after Lin Biao's demise in 1971. The most fascinating finding of the book is that, far from being necessarily imposed from above, the Mao cult - in some of its creative manifestations - was actually a grass-root phenomenon. It was moreover hijacked for political purposes and contestations by rival groups, especially during the high tide of the Cultural Revolution, leading to grave dissatisfaction not only on Mao's part but also among the members of the so called Cultural Revolution Group, who were apprehensive of losing control of the brand. The book is also simply a great read, especially in places where the author discusses some of the unusual facets of the Cult like"quotation gymnastics" and "loyalty dances." Leese's conclusion is a poignant one: "until the party finally allows for an independent assessment of Mao and opens its archives, the shadow of Mao will continue to haunt his successors."

A must read book for those with any interest in Mao

This is an essential book for anyone wishing to understand the cult of personality that arose around Mao. Leese's insightful analysis not only documents the origins of the cult (as a counterweight to that arising around Chiang Kai-Shek), but through it's many surprising manifestations (exercise regimes done while chanting revolutionary slogan) and the surprising fact that ultimately the party lost control of Mao's image and, to some degree, the cult itself and had to struggle to regain it. Replete with accounts of the many, many ways the cult was manifested this book both astounds and educates and you will finish it much more knowledgeable than when you started. The cult of Mao is part of every book about Mao and Mao's China, but none come close to giving the reader the detailed understanding of the phenomenon that one gets in this book. I read the Kindle version and it was an excellent digital conversion. No problems with garbled names, strange spacing, or any of the other problems that sometimes plague Kindle versions.

Whether for academic or leisure reading this book will not disappoint. Excellent synthesis of previous scholarship combined with an impressive array of primary sourcess. Easy to read and compliments the works by Schram, Dikotter, and Meisner. More of a real book than "Shades of Mao", and far more available.

Another must read book.

A brilliant purva paksha and Uttara paksha on Western Indology. Rajiv Malhotra is one of the most gifted and brilliant writers. His simple, concise and no-nonsense writing style makes a really complicated subject easy to understand and appreciate. He is like Richard Feynman of Indian Philosophy. One of the best things I like about the books are these frameworks which help you to think better on the subject. In his previouse works, he provided the concepts of Intellectual Kurukshetra, digestion, porcupine defense e.t.c. These help you to understand the problem more clearly.
This book is no exception. He effectively uses the concept of insider vs outsider, prescriptive vs descriptive writings, sacred philology.

The goal of this book is to provide tools to understand the complex state of Asian Studies. Couple of years back when I read some of the discussions in RISA forums, I was shocked to see how biased some of the prominent academicians of Asian Studies are (Search for RISA LILA ). This book provides a good framework to understand the motivations and mechanisms of western Indology (a.k.a Asian studies)

There are some brilliant reviews about this book (again..search for "The battle for Sanskrit" review) and lot of talks by the author himself in youtube. So, I am not giving detailed description of contents of the book.

This book really helped me in understanding works of Sheldon Pollock. I tried to read his papers couple of time. But his complicated sentence formations along with vague description of things makes it really complicated (especially his paper about liberation philology). After reading this book, I was able to understand his writings and motivations. Now I can clearly see how his communistic upbrining influenced his writings and influeincing many of his students.

In conclusion this is a book which must be read and then keep with you as a reference.

Taking control of the discourse to protect Sanskrit/Sanskriti

Western indologists have been interpreting Sanskrit literature as encoding socially oppressive attitudes and political agendas. However, no response has been seen from traditional quarters. Reason? Writings of Western indologists have remained largely inaccessible to traditional Hindu scholars because of arcane theories and impenetrable jargon from Western social sciences and political sciences. Rajiv Malhotra laments, "I was disappointed that an internationally renowned Indian expert in Sanskrit drew a complete blank when I asked him basic questions regarding a prominent Western indologist’s major work."

Although Sanskrit tradition has met with many challenges in the past, situation now is more dire than ever. For the first time, American scholars of Sanskrit have co-opted Indian billionaires, received Indian government awards and endorsements and become the darlings of the mainstream Indian media elite. In effect, the outsiders have infiltrated some of the most sacred, established and renowned traditional Sanskrit centres of learning.

This book is a clarion call to insiders (of tradition) to renergize the process of their intellectual tradition. In terms of methodology, Indian intellectual tradition has practices of purva-paksha (examining the opponent’s position) and uttara-paksha (developing a response). These practices go back many millennia and were historically used to have open debates. Intellectual tradition needs to be reenergized to prevent this one-sided tirade of outsiders of tradition.

To redress imbalance in the discourse resulting from one-sided dominance by Western indologists, Rajiv Malhotra took on the monumental task of showing insiders (of tradition) what outsiders (of tradition) are writing in the name of indology. In simple and lucid writing, Rajiv Malhotra exposes major assumptions that Western indologists make in theorizing history of Indian knowledge systems. In so doing, Rajiv Malhotra takes on contemporary giants of Western indology (prominently Sheldon Pollock) and exposes their damning narrative on Sanskrit and Sanskriti.

This book is written with Insiders in mind and shows major battle-fronts along three questions: Is Sanskrit (1) Sacred or Political, (2) Liberating or Oppressive, (3) Alive or Dead?

Awesome book!

This is a great summer, southern story that had me hooked from the very first page. Now this Savannah, I not only adored but fell in love with. She reminded me of me so much. I really enjoyed reading this book. The southern boy in this book, not only said things that made me gasp, but grip my heart hard.

You got to love your southern boys. Always real and true, this boy Jack, said everything right and more. He is your type of guys who knows what he wants. And when he finds it, he will not let it go. He is reasonable and very responsible, the type every girl wants to marry. He did things all the right way in courting. He was true to everything he said.

Savannah, I loved her! She had a lot to learn but I was glad that she had a good mama, and great boyfriend, Jack to teach her to breath. Savannah would freak out over every little thing. And if I remember correctly, I was the same way. Something went wrong and Bam, I am was in a fit! I loved that while Savannah would go into a fit someone was there to hold her, to help her breath again. But more so, I am glad that Savannah was beginning to learn to breath on her own.

The plot of this book is nothing dramatic, but just wonderfully simple. It didn't need much drama or problems cause the characters were enough for the reader. The characters were a whole another story themselves. If you want a down right, good ol' southern book, read this. I can assure you, it will not only make you feel southern in your mind but in your heart!

Like Breathing

In the novel Breathing by Cheryl Renee Herbsman, a young woman named Savannah - named after the tornado that was passing through and being announced on the radio when her mother was in labor - struggles to find her strength. Troubled by her severe asthma, she is one point of her three-person family, alongside her younger brother Dog (Dogwood) and her single mother, who can't hold job due to Savannah's frequent hospitalizations and emergencies. Her father left when she was three - and the asthma started the day he left. Meanwhile, her mother won't tell her employers about her daughter's condition due to pride.

Savannah has a summer job at the public library, where she works alongside a librarian called Miss Patsy. Her main task is re-shelving books. She also runs storytime sometimes, and some days it's a headache, but some days the kids are attentive.

Meanwhile, Savannah's English teacher, Mrs. Avery, put Savannah's name in for the Program for Promising High School Students, a semester-long college experience for tenth graders in Blue Ridge Mountains. Only 50 kids from both Carolinas can go. She filled out apps even though she knew they couldn't afford it. And goodness, how that hurts. If you've been there, you get it.

Then Savannah meets Jackson. She hopes it's something more than summer love, and it seems to be, as Jackson supports her through hospital stays and other worries. But when Jackson has to leave, Savannah must live for herself, to fight her fragile trappings and find strength.

Herbsman's writing is lovely, and Savannah is a thoughtful and perceptive narrator. All of the characters in Savannah's life - family, friends, mentors - matter to her, and her appreciation for them is endearing. Some of the most beautiful moments and poignant reflections in the book come at the close of the chapters. Savannah ultimately realizes she has to find out if she can breathe on her own and be her own cure, not wait for somebody to come and rescue her like her mom waited for her dad for 12 long years.

If you're a Sarah Dessen fan, you should read Breathing by Cheryl Renee Herbsman.

I can't even lie, this cover drew me in like candy! Ha, Ha. I just finished, read it in about five hours. Easy fun, and interesting read!

The book is written in a thick southern dialect! It flows though, and sometimes I read a sentence twice, but I get the gist of it.

Savannah has asma, and the asma is so bad sometimes she has to go to the hospital and has to stay for days. Because of this, her mom loses jobs, and sometimes neglects her brother. Savannah's mom has strict rules for her, so she should, she's only 15. She meets a boy, 18, named Jackson and for some weird reason instantly they fall for each other. This book starts off slow, but as the story progresses you like it. It's written in present tense so you're reading it like it's happening now. It was kind of interesting, my first book this way. Very neat. Savannah sometimes comes off as older, but in the south girls do grow up faster, because they have to. She's really smart, she wants to write, loves to read and has a great head on her shoulders. Because she's so young, you can see the childlike manner in how she handles her relationship with Jackson, and her family. But, she's fifteen you have to expect her naive views, and her selfishness; you just don't quite understand why Jackson accepts it. I mean the book is a love story in a way, and the character in the end grows up a bit, and she realizes the comfort she has in her family. I love the family relationship, they are well meant for each other. Although I feel her and her brother should have been closer, and her mother more stern on him.

This book is a great read for people who just like to read about another possibility of life, and a kind of good description of a healthy relationship. Since she is fifteen it doesn't seem that way, but I mean like I said, it just is. He's not taking advantage of her, he's super nice,and he basically follows the rules her mom gives. You see how each person in the relationship helps the other accomplish their dreams, and this is the sweet cute relationship, you want to read about.

About the Author
Chad A. Noggle, PhD, ABN, is an associate professor of clinical psychiatry and chief of the division of behavioral and psychosocial oncology at Southern Illinois University-School of Medicine. He previously served as an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University-School of Medicine and both Ball State University and Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Noggle holds a BA in psychology from the University of Illinois at Springfield and completed his MA and PhD at Ball State University with specialization in clinical neuropsychology. He completed a 2-year postdoctoral residency at the Indiana Neuroscience Institute at St. Vincent's Hospital with specialization in pediatric and adult/geriatric neuropsychology. To date, Dr. Noggle has published more than 300 articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and research abstracts and has made over 100 presentations at national and international conferences in neuropsychology. He served as the lead editor of "The Encyclopedia of Neuropsychological Disorders", "The Neuropsychology of Psychopathology", "The Neuropsychology of Cancer and Oncology", and "Neuropsychological Rehabilitation", the latter three representing additional volumes of the Contemporary Neuropsychology series. He currently serves as a reviewer for a number of neuropsychology journals and is a member of the editorial board for "Applied Neuropsychology: Adult" and "Applied Neuropsychology: Child". Dr. Noggle is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology and a professional member of the American Psychological Association (divisions 5, 22, 38, 40), the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the International Neuropsychological Society. For his contributions to the field of neuropsychology, Dr. Noggle was named a fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology. He is also a fellow of the American College of Professional Neuropsychology. Dr. Noggle is a licensed psychologist in both Illinois and Indiana. His research interests focus on both adult and pediatric populations, spanning psychiatric illnesses, dementia, pervasive developmental disorders, and neuromedical disorders.

Raymond S. Dean, PhD, ABPP, ABN, ABPdN, holds a BA in psychology (magna cum laude) and an MS in research and psychometrics from the State University of New York at Albany. As a Parachek-Frazier Research Fellow, he completed a PhD in school/child clinical psychology at Arizona State University in 1978. Dr. Dean completed an internship focused on neuropsychology at the Arizona Neuropsychiatric Hospital and postdoctoral work at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Since his doctoral degree, he has served in a number of positions and has been recognized for his work. From 1978 to 1980, Dr. Dean was an assistant professor and director of the Child Clinic at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. During this time, he was awarded the Lightner Witmer Award by the school psychology division of the American Psychological Association (APA). From 1980 to 1981, he served as assistant professor of psychological services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1981 to 1984, Dr. Dean served as assistant professor of medical psychology and director of the neuropsychology internship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. During this same time, Dr. Dean received both the Outstanding Contribution Award from the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the Early Contribution Award by division 15 of the APA. He was named the George and Frances Ball distinguished professor of neuropsychology and director of the neuropsychology laboratory at Ball State University and has served in this position since 1984. In addition, Dr. Dean served as distinguished visiting faculty at the Staff College of the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Dean is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology, and the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology. He is a fellow of the APA (divisions: clinical, educational, school, and clinical neuropsychology), the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the American Psychopathological Association. Dr. Dean is a past president of the clinical neuropsychology division of the APA and the National Academy of Neuropsychology. He also served as editor of the "Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology", "Journal of School Psychology", and the "Bulletin of the National Academy of Neuropsychology". Dr. Dean has published some 600 research articles, books, chapters, and tests. For his work, he has been recognized by awards from the National Academy of Neuropsychology, the "Journal of School Psychology", and the Clinical Neuropsychology Division of the APA.

Mark T. Barisa, PhD, ABPP, is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas, TX. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Neuropsychology and is active in numerous professional organizations including AACN, NAN, and APA (Divisions 40 and 22). Dr. Barisa is a licensed a clinical psychologist in Texas and Indiana. He has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including administrative positions, while maintaining teaching and training activities for pre-doctoral interns and post-doctoral residents. He is active in research and has presented at numerous local, national, and international on neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology, and the business aspects of psychological practice. Dr. Barisa is the author of the forthcoming book "The Business of Neuropsychology: A Practical Guide". His research and clinical interests have focused on outcome measurement in rehabilitation, differential diagnosis of dementia, functional correlates of neuropsychological data, and return to work issues following injury/illness.

Excellent Point Of care Resource on DIABETES for Primary Care

I just bought my hard copy last month and I have also heard Dr Jeff Unger in person on diabetes seminars. He is a primary care physician and being primary care physician myself this book is all I need to know improve diabetes care for my patients. This is not a Harisson or a detailed Thesis on Diabetes but practicle great point of care informations and diferent tools which can be used in an office settings to educate patient and office staff to improve diabetes care. With the fact that 90% of Diabetic population in US (out of approx 22 million people with diabetes)being taken care by Primary care physicians this is a must have tool I believe. The only thing better than the book is to hear Dr Jeff Uner in person. I would definately recommened this book to every Primary care MD or residents.

Excellent diabetes management reference for PCPs

I have just completed the section explains insulin initiation in this book, and it was enjoyable reading. One can read medical references like Harrison's about diabetes, but this is the book specifically written for primary care provider. All the information in the book has been written in practical manner so PCP can apply it instantly. My only complain is the book is printed in black and white, even the pictures. It has many helpful tables and algorithms, but it would have been much better if they were color coded.

Diabetes Text book

Amazingly comprehensive review of all aspects of diabetes. This book is up to date, evidence-based, case based and most importantly, written from the heart. Rarely do medical text books read like novels. This is the exception. Check out the chapter on managing mental illness in patients with diabetes. The complications chapter is the most comprehensive and current review I have encountered.
