mystery solved

I'd like to clear up the mystery of the vanishing review. I wrote Handyman, and my son (13) was excited to see it on Amazon. He decided to write a review, glowing of course, but forgot he had signed in under my screen name. When the review was posted it appeared that I had written it. I was embarrassed, to say the least, and told him to fix the problem, which he did. But someone had already read it and was offended at what looked like blatant, and not very skillful self-promotion. Sorry. No offense intended. By the way, I am giving myself a rating of 3, because I have to fill in the field, and even though I believe Handyman is a good book, I didn't want to add to my offenses by giving it a 5. (Do you suppose I'll be able to laugh at this someday?)

Reality Therapy

Maggie Ivey is having a bad year - actually, a bad five years, ever since her boyfriend impregnated her, then left her with five hundred dollars and a callous note about "taking care of it." She didn't, and though her son Tim is the apple of her eye, other aspects of her life are well and truly broken. She is being sexually harassed on a dead end job that doesn't have the pay or benefits she was originally promised, and she just takes it without protest. Her mother wants her to go home and marry the local boy, dependable, but a little dull and a lot more emotionally abusive. Her so-called best friend thinks she needs a "21 Day Overhaul," the latest time-limited therapy rage on the West Coast. Maggie's friend Gina even springs for the cost of the therapy, so all Maggie has to do is show up in the renowned Dr. Jason Golding's office and go to work on her life. One problem: Dr. Golding is temporarily unavailable. In a comedy of errors and mistaken identities, Maggie ends up pouring out her heartache to contractor Jake Cooper, whom Dr. Golding has hired to remodel his office in his absence. Jake's been accused of being communication-impaired and emotionally unavailable by his ex-girlfriend, Lindsay, so you can imagine his surprise (and unexpectedly growing pleasure) when he actually turns out to be therapeutic for Maggie! The ensuing story gives new meaning to the saying (also quoted in the novel), "Oh what a tangled web we weave...," but also highlights how chance encounters can lead to lasting attractions and love, and how easily one can miss one's soulmate if they are not "in the right place, at the right time."
I got wrapped up in Maggie and Jake, and I had a mounting sense of anxiety as I read this book, as if there were a big freight train racing toward them. I couldn't figure out how Jake was going to extract himself from the situation, and whether he would end up being victimized by his ex (a therapy addict), by Maggie's friend Gina (determined to "fix" Maggie's unexpectedly growing assertiveness by nailing her unscrupulous therapist and hopefully turning her back into a whimpering dependent in the process), or by Dr. Golding, a well-portrayed slime-ball psychobabblist. Not to fear - in a delightfully written, dry but droll climax worthy of the best film farces, all the pieces fall into place except one. Read the book to find out!
Yes, you will have to suspend reality in order to accept the premise of this novel - that an emotionally beaten-down woman could actually believe that what was being done, was therapy. But the genius of this story is that that's probably how unethical psychological charlatans ply their wares. Jake and Dr. Jason were nicely drawn as counterpoints to one another, and the supporting characters were well and thoroughly dyssocial. The romance develops slowly and is understated, without much steaminess but a lot of affection. The author draws the story to its conclusion with the same matter-of-fact and unadorned narrative that she uses throughout the story, which makes the craziness of the whole situation stand out even more. Yes, it's an improbable plot - but, hey, it's great fiction!

Exceptionally Well Done

There are many books written on color, some of the classic being the ones by Judd and Wyszecki, Wyszecki and Styles, Durrett and others. The book is exceptional. It provides a visceral understanding of the elements of color by dealing with the fundamentals by example. Each example builds upon the previous ones and as they do so one gains insights that surpass any other text. In many ways it reads like a novel, the wording is smooth and flawless and the inserts of wisdom resonate with the theme being developed.

Chapter 1 defines color. The approach is graphical and not mathematical, yet the mathematics flow immediately from the approach taken. Rather than providing details in equations the authors provide details in very well done graphics. The example used to describe color is brilliant. It uses the metaphor of colored stones and their classification. From that the complex issues and ideas of hue, lightness and chroma are immediately evident and do not require the reader to do anything except follow the colored stones. The shortest and best explanation ever!

Chapter 2 describes color using the red, blue and green models. The authors simply walk through the evolution and issues so that when one arrives at the CIE chart all makes sense. Then of course on page 61 they rip the chart to shreds, metaphorically to state that it is only a cross section of what is required; it forgets brightness!

Chapter 3 is about measurements. The approach is a great balance of ideas, constructs, implementations, and does not fall into the trap of over description or of simplifying too much. The reader is never put in the position of missing the dots in between. There is never "it I left as an exercise for the student" approach that many academic authors take. On p. 83 there is a good summary of all the key instruments and then details.

Chapters 4, 5, and 6 continue to look at measuring color, colorants (dyes versus pigments) and then producing colors. What I found interesting is that plants are said to have pigments, but to the authors pigments generally are non-organic compounds having metals.

What is missing? Well that will depend on each reviewer's favorite topic. Mine are twofold. First, what is color, namely what is the effect of absorption on light and why? For example in plant anthocyanins there are slight changes in the molecule of say cyanidin that change it from red to blue, because one absorbs blue, thus becoming red and one red thus becoming blue. This discussion would have helped. Then there is the issue of plant color in general. How would one estimate concentrations of separate anthocyanins from total reflected light knowing the underlying profiles. This would be applying signals and estimation to the overall problem. But that is just my preference, the book as it is currently done is perfect, I would just have wished that they kept going on, since what they had done was so well presented.

Educational and entertaining

This book addresses an often over-looked trauma of childhood -- moving to a new home. It successfully helps children deal with the bittersweet feelings they will encounter during this life-changing event. The text is educational as well as entertaining. The activities are sure to delight. Every preschool, elementary teacher and realtor should have a copy of this book.

Perfect for long car ride to new home!

I purchased this for a student in my class who was moving from Delaware to Maine. It was a great going away gift and has many activities for children to do, especially while on a long car ride to their new home. I had all of the students in the class sign the book to add an extra special touch. Very pleased with how the author touches on all of the sensitive feelings of moving away for children.

Awful for any child that can't read

This ignores people that are moving from or into condos or apartments. The activities in this book are really only for those that can read - definitely not a 4 year old! Word searches? Are you kidding? Even if they understand the word search concept - they can't read yet to know what they found! I also don't know many 4 year-olds that can do connect the dots & mazes either. This book would be much better suited for those in kindergarten or 1st grade and up.

Michael Green has had a long and interesting life. With first-class degrees from both Oxford and Cambridge, he combines the gifts of both theologian and evangelist. He is an Anglican minister, has travelled in every continent to spread the gospel, and has been special adviser in evangelism to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. He has taught in universities, been principal of a theological college, led a large university church, written more than 50 books and engaged fruitfully in church-planting overseas. He lives in Oxfordshire with his wife, Rosemary.

summary of Christianity as originally taught by Christ. It takes us back to the times, history and original context without the intervening centuries
of Church politics or dogma. Yet it is done in a practical, no nonsense, modern style acknowledging past/current religious and secular prejudices about Christ. In short, it is a discussion of Christianity that both Christians and non-Christians can be proud of without having to suspend their faith, reason, or intelect

this is the only book I ever buy in bulk - it is great to give to people who are unfamiliar with Christianity,Jesus Christ, the church, etc. This book is very easy to read and the content (although their is no scriptural reference) is very accurate Biblically. I encourage Christians to read this to further deeper your understanding of Jesus.

It is small and short, but packed with a common way to understand Jesus in his day and what that means for us in our day. Que decir, ha sido una historia fresca y r�pida de leer. Los caracteres de los personajes estan muy marcados y Britt es un amor, no es la t�pica mujer v�ctima que necesita de que la socorran; necesita protecci�n como cualquiera pero tambi� sabe proteger y sabe afrontar las cosas solas, sumado a su fuerte car�cter explosivo.
Natthan por su parte es un hombre un tanto rudo, debido a las profesiones en las que ha trabajado, m�s de una vez me dieron ganas de matarlo! Es muy cabez�n.
La uni�n que tiene con su familia es preciosa, me encant�. Una historia que habla de la familia, de la lealtad hacia ella; saber apreciar las oportunidades que te da la vida y sobre todo... de que lo que tiene que ser ser� m�s tarde o m�s temprano.
El amor en la historia es perfecto, no es de esos muy empalagosos, es apasionado y fresco en muchos sentido.
La recomiendo!

Una novela f�cil de leer para cualquier tipo de p�blico, llena de personajes entra�ables y con una narraci�n suave que te introduce en la historia sin darte cuenta, hasta que no puedes dejar de leer. Llena de sensualidad, humor y valores humanos.

Es una historia que me ha cautivado y desde luego si esta es su primera novela, las dem�s estoy seguro de que nos dejaran con la boca abierta. Otra cosa que me llam� la atenci�n es que no s�lo se centra en el papel de la mujer, sino que adem�s el hombre es muy bien detallado desde su forma de ser hasta sus sentimientos, algo que la mayor�a de las autoras no se preocupan por describir y provoca que los hombres no nos sintamos atra�dos con la novela rom�ntica ya que todo gira siempre entorno a la mujer y no podemos sentirnos identificados.

About the Author
Antonio Di Lieto is a master mariner, hydrographer and simulator instructor. He has been lucky enough to meet and work together with some of the experts that have given birth to the original concept of Bridge Resource Management. These are both visionary and tenacious people who have spearheaded progress within the maritime industry over the last few decades. This book would have not been possible without them.

Bridge Resource Management in a complex maritime world - an updated approach

After an interesting walk-through of the Costa Concordia event in the first chapter, Di Lieto analyzes the accident in detail from the perspective of “…human error is a symptom of problems deeper in the system”. Latent conditions on operational, organizational and regulatory levels as well as culture factors inducing human error of different types are identified and presented in an easy access way.

What you do not expect to find in a book like this is the well-written section describing the culture of the seafarers, Italian in particular, and of the cruising industry and its history in general. Such background is very relevant and normally absent in accident reports and related literature. By means of interviews, Di Lieto has collected data that gives us an understanding of much of what happened on the Costa Concordia.

The Operational Concept chapter contains a review of the human and technical resources available on the bridge, followed by a section covering practical application of BRM. The human resource section is a useful summary of human strengths and weaknesses, and the technical resources section provides descriptions of a wide range of operational and navigational equipment, concepts and systems, This makes the book also a valuable reference book and a source for refreshing technical knowledge.

In the practical application section, BRM is set into practice. Initially, BRM was not about, for instance, procedures, but about attitudes to procedures. With increased complexity of integrated navigation systems and man-machine interfaces, procedures must also be brought into the picture. De Lieto gives a number of good examples of procedures and role distributions, even proposes bridge layouts for BRM applications. In fact, the intention of the book is to upgrade BRM from just a set of teamwork enhancing behavioral tools to an integrated solution onboard. Automation is often referred to as a source for new errors, and in the Costa Concordia case we can see lack of using automation as a contributing factor.

The concluding chapter “Implementation” contains a short review of the history and development and of Bridge Resource Management, especially in the cruising industry, followed by a view into the future. Again, Di Lieto uses interview techniques to illustrate thoughts about future implementation of BRM. Amongst others, the use of simulators and the new assessment system MOSA (Maritime Operation Safety Analysis), with its roots in aviation’s LOSA, are addressed.

The reference list is impressing; the contents rest on a solid academic ground, presented in an easy-access way. This book should be used as course material in all BRM courses.

A book written for all modern day navigators, educators and managers involved in the safe navigation of ships.

This book covers all the principles of bridge resource management vital to the safe navigation of modern day vessels and is a must read for all involved in the safe navigation of ships.
The book has been very well researched and includes relevant interviews with world renowned experts in the maritime industry. The focus of the book is the history, philosophy and implementation of BRM and modern day navigational practices.
The first part of the book concentrates on the Costa Concordia disaster covering all aspects of the accident with particular focus on the human factors involved. The root causes of the accident are highlighted from the operational (ship), organisational (company) and regulatory (government) levels. The analysis covers how life at sea and the demands on seafarers have changed with improved communications and the development of new navigational procedures and advancement in technology.
The development of the cruise industry is explained and the challenges this particular part of the marine industry has faced with the tremendous growth over a relatively short space of time. This pressure has brought about a situation where, whilst there was obviously a large growth in production and revenue, this growth was not countered with the necessary expenditure on risk protection, namely an awareness of cultural factors, education and practical training.
The second part of the book concentrates on the principal and understanding of BRM. The book is not an instructional guide on how BRM should be used but its aim is to explain the philosophy and principle behind BRM encompassing the potential and limitations of human nature, the on board navigational, safety and environmental systems on board modern vessels. This section gives an excellent summary of the equipment in use today, the information given is factual and concise providing a good reference for all modern navigators.
The origins of BRM are explained to the reader with an interview with Captain Kari Larjo who was the first to develop and implement the concept of BRM. He saw the need for integrated navigation techniques, equipment and more effective teamwork on the bridge of a ship.
The next section of this part describes the practical elements of BRM and the importance of proper voyage planning, execution and monitoring. We are then introduced to the ideal bridge layout to conduct proper BRM. The principal factor is to ensure there is excellent communication between the members of the bridge team and all relevant systems and information is placed in the most ergonomically correct location. The roles and responsibilities of the bridge team are defined and also the principal of ‘thinking aloud’ and ‘closed loop communication’ are explained. In this section the author covers the varying degree of control that may be held by the pilot namely whether he has ‘direct’ or ‘indirect’ control.
The next section introduces the reader to the BRM model based on the 4Ps namely- Operational principles, Company policies, Operating procedures and Specific practices. The principal of this model is to ensure that policies and procedures are produced to ensure they are relevant, workable and reduce ambiguity by defining the following elements for each task, when is it required? Who has responsibility for it? How will it be done? It endeavours to ensure there is a positive attitude towards teamwork and procedures. The next section then uses the 4P principal for voyage planning and execution.
The third part of the book describes the processes required from the regulatory level, organisational level and operational level to ensure effective implementation of BRM.
There is a brief history of the evolution of BRM on cruise ships and how, in particular Carnival Corporation continue to develop and implement the BRM culture.
We are given a summary with regard to safety management systems and how they evolved. The Costa Concordia highlighted that an SMS whilst being compliant from an international regulatory perspective was ineffective in preventing such a tragedy. We are introduced to a concept of a self-regulating safety management system which can identify and mitigate specific operational risks, where effective due diligence is carried out and there is a good balance between production and protection.
It is reasoned that such a system requires a dedicated safety culture and a ‘just’ culture within the company.
The book then continues to describe the organisational processes to put in place with regard to risk management, defining and monitoring procedures/ practices, recruitment, training, assessment and professional development.
The next section of the book details the concept of E navigation. The aim of E navigation is to develop a regulatory framework to harmonise new technology both on a ships bridge and shore based control centres. The book highlights the need for such a new operational concept to improve the integration between new technologies and operators following a robust operational concept. There is then a discussion about the future of navigation with the possible use of traffic management centres along the lines of air traffic control.
A very relevant chapter is dedicated to the duties and rights of seafarers emphasising the fact that whilst the Marine Labour Convention 2006 is a step in the right direction, it is a minimum standard that should be improved upon given that the living and working conditions at sea are often more oppressive than working ashore.
The conclusion of the book states that “we can assert that a reform of navigation safety requires a change in operational, organisational and regulatory philosophy” and “if we really want to manage the risks emerging from the growing complexity of the digital age we need more sophisticated competencies on board ships. Acquiring them is going to be very difficult under the present employment and living conditions of seafarers.”
This book has been written by mariners for mariners and management. I am sure that this book along other common sense initiatives will go a long way to changing the culture and wellbeing of seafarers and improving safety within the shipping industry.

Landmark Book

The media in regard to the Costa Concordia accident behaved in a disgraceful and irresponsible manner. Also although the Italian government as a signatory to the International Convention on Marine Accident Investigation is required to conduct a safety investigation into the accident it has declared that under its legal system criminal investigations have precedence.

The possibility of an investigation with safety outcomes from such a high profile, tragic and costly accident appeared very remote. That is, until Antonio took it upon himself to carry out the safety investigation.

The evidence for the investigation has been derived from the Costa Concordia's Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) recording and the transcript of the audio and interviews of the ship’s officers. Both were posted on the Internet for a few weeks.

The task was very arduous and time consuming because it first required the slow and painstaking task of correlating the times from the VDR with the audio transcript. It is not a coincidence that no journalist or writer made a similar effort.

Collecting the evidence was only the starting point. After that Antonio has examined the relevant social economic, cultural, technical and technological environment in which the accident occurred. This aspect of the work involved extensive reading, research and conducting onsite interviews in different parts of the world. In this regard I was interviewed by Antonio last year.

After the fact finding and research phase Antonio has used a modern sophisticated framework (Reason Model) to analyse the accident and come up with safety outcomes that the shipping industry can utilize. These safety outcomes relate to identifying interventions and risk controls that could have prevented the accident and many other accidents in shipping.

The book also covers the physiology and psychology underpinning human performance, contemporary safety science, ergonomics, and hydrodynamics.

Antonio has been hugely ambitious in writing the book but I believe he has carried it off. He has consolidated a very large amount of material in less than 300 pages. I don’t believe something like this has ever been done before for the shipping industry.

Antonio has performed a great service for the shipping industry. He has written a unique book that can be used both as a text and a reference book. It deserves the widest audience in the shipping industry where it can be used as a guide in making the transition from the traditional to the digital age. At present the best that can be said is that the shipping industry is muddling along.
