Helpful Wildlife Guide

This compact guide will be helpful with SOME, but by no means all, Panama reptile and amphibian identification, but can not replace more complete bird and mammal guides for the country (birds) or region (mammals). The plastic laminate covering will help protect the guide under most weather conditions. I look forward to using it!

I didn't realize this is a one page laminated pamphlet, approximately 8 1/2 x 26 inches. It is really nice, with good photos but no detailed information. Not the book I expected.

About the Author
Erich Blechschmidt was an anatomist and embryologist who worked for more than forty years on the problem of human form and the way that form arises in the course of ontogeny, principally during the first eight weeks or so after conception. He has provided us with more than 120 scientific papers and numerous books concerning the development of human form and function. One unique aspect of Blechschmidt's research is that it concentrates on the evidence presented by the human embryo itself, in the form of a comprehensive collection of about 200,000 serial sections of embryos at different ages and sixty-four enlarged total reconstructions at the University of Guttingen (The Blechschmidt Collection and Museum). The sustained investigation of this wealth of material led to a totally new way of looking at early human development, which compels us to re-think older interpretations based mainly on phylogenetic or molecular biological studies. It is possible to see how adult functions arise naturally and consistently from the embryo's earlier growth functions. This present book is a condensation of many of these findings and a presentation of the new viewpoint.

Wow, beginnings

Many people would find this book boring and probably wonder who would care about the details just as long as the end result is evident. Erich Blechschmidt deserves 5 stars for presenting complex information clearly and simply with accuracy, emotion, and questions to stimulate thought which draws the reader into the marvel of the amazing minutiae of human conception to development which prepares us all to come into this world.

Through the dialogue, the author explores many different points of view and complex philosophical ideas. Grounded in a distinctly Jewish tradition, and drawing on Neoplatonic philosophical structures and Arabic sources, the work offers a useful compendium of classical and contemporary thought, yet was not incompatible with Christian doctrine.

Despite the unfinished state and somewhat controversial, enigmatic nature of Ebreo's famous text, it remains one of the most significant and influential works in the history of Western thought. Great Survey of the Calculus

Priestley's work is a gem in that it incorporates the full-orbed liberal arts approach to the calculus. Professor Priestley places the differential and integral calculus in the context of history (the best methodology for teaching any aspect of mathematics). You will also find a good number of brain-expanding exercises and real world applications strategically placed in the text. This book is a "must-have" text for any teacher of mathematics and for a student who desires to understand the calculus in the context of history, science, philosophy, and literature. This is education at its best!

Conceptual introduction to calculus.

I have worked through the book myself and can report that I have not come away with any of the negative impressions reviewer Blasjo is talking about. In any case, the rigorous development of calculus has been an evolutionary process with the big ideas having come first, and the logical support developed later. And any serious student of calculus will agree that new concepts and subtleties have to be mastered in the course of study, usually starting with incomprehension gradually giving way to illumination.

This book is unique in the way it presents the *concepts* of calculus and ties it with the historical development of the subject. The exercises should be worked on thoughtfully and even when right answers are obtained some time should be allotted to thinking why the solution works and what is it in the structure of the problem that makes the solution right. Maths is hard work and this books give excellent direction to the effort expected of the student.

And I do not see why advanced topics should be left out of the book purposely. One needs to realise that if we waited for full understanding of any subject before we can start using it, then we will have to wait forever. I believe a lot of cutting-edge mathematics research tries to answer the seemingly elementary question "What is a number?". Surely, we all have a functional understanding that is good enough to master the maths at our individual levels, although the concept of a number can get tricky when thought about very fundamentally. And we are conscious that a deeper understanding is possible if more time is invested, but we accept as adequate the present understanding as long as it is coherent with the maths the student knows thus far. Seen this way, I have no problems with analysis level material kept out of the book, the same way full blown Shakespeare's works are kept out Grade 1 textbooks.

This book has a lot of value to deliver to the intelligent student not trained in mathematics, but with an aptitude for it.

About the Author
Inge Dougans was born in Denmark, where she received her reflexology training. In 1983 she started the School of Reflexology and Meridian therapy and in 1985 she formed the South African Reflexology Society. Reflexology: The 5 Elements and their 12 Meridians

This book is actually used as a text book for training as a Therapeutic Reflexologist in SA. Combines reflexology techniques with Chinese Meridian and Elements theory. Found it comprehensive and interesting, but as it is a text book it is not aimed at the casual reader. It is hard to get one's head around the concepts on first reading unless guided in a classroom context and would need to be combined with face to face input if one is not already well versed in reflexology or meridian theory. Would have preferred a few more summary tables to provide the "bare bones" on which to build the detail.

Brilliant link between TCM and Reflexology

A brilliant book but disappointed I bought it on Kindle as illustrations were not available. Definitely purchase in the paper version if you're a student of natural therapies.

Lavishly illustrated picture of the Ancien Regime

This tells us a lot about Jefferson, incidentally showing in his day-to-day life the confluences and contradictions that enriched his own life and the American soul for a couple of centuries afterwards. It also gives a vivid picture of Paris in the years leading up to the French Revolution. The seller filled the order rapidly and described the book's condition accurately. I'm happy to have it.

A Great book for Datsun lovers!

How To Modify Your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine was recommended to me when I my husband and I bought my 1968 510 Datsun SCCA race car. The instructions for performing various disassembly/assembly tasks are clear, with a complete parts break-out for every task covered.

This is the only Datsun modification book we own, and I can't imagine needing any other one.

Black Gold Highlights Great Historical Novel

In an exciting historical adventure, Devil's Pocket, Fred B. McKinley brings us sex and secrets during the times when black gold was the lure for men striving to make their fame and fortune. More, he gives us three family stories that twine and intertwine so fully that murder had to result--secrets always come out! McKinley uses his knowledge and research for his earlier book, Black Gold to Bluegrass, a nonfiction account of the second Spindletop oil boom that occurred in 1925 in Beaumont, Texas. With this background, he has created a thrilling first novel that pulls readers into the time and feelings of those who lived and searched for the rich oil lands in early America.

The main thrust of the book follows the life of Morgan, a young ambitious man who moved quickly and easily from one job to another as he sought to secure his financial future. While ambitious, he was also a man who loved and respected his family, working diligently to provide support and a home for his mother and sister.

Rachael fell in love with Morgan upon first sight. She was the daughter of a rich man and the granddaughter of an even richer man! Morgan had come to Rachael's father to seek financial support in one of his ventures. Thoughts of Rachael or any other woman were far from his plans, as he became friends with her father. Many years went by as Rachael waited and longed for Morgan to notice and come to love her.

A simple love story? Not!

While waiting for Morgan, Rachael foolishly flirts with the wrong man, and because he doesn't listen to her when she tells him to "stop," she later finds herself pregnant. Rachael wants both to keep her child and to not have to admit that she is hers. Her lies later leave her daughter in the same situation and with the same man--her father!

As Morgan is busily making an honorable name for himself and working continuously to move forward toward his goals, oil is struck at Spindletop and he gets a touch of the "fever" that many men followed and for which many men failed. Morgan had his sights set on leasing land that he felt would be rich with oil. The only problem was that Rachael's grandfather owned it! Morgan went to his friend, Rachael's father, hoping to work through him to gain support to lease his father-in-law's land, but they had been enemies since the birth of Rachael since his daughter had died giving birth. However, there was one thing that the two men had in common--a love for Rachael so strong that they could put aside their estrangement and secretly work toward making Rachael happy; i.e., married to Morgan!

Devil's Pocket was the bait...

Oil was struck there--richer even than Spindletop! But at what cost? For in the end, Morgan and his sister were dead and so was Rachael, her father, and her grandfather.

Susannah Fletcher, a granddaughter, was one of the few left. She wore a tarnished cross from a grandmother she had never known. And she was given her grandmother's diary to haunt her until she found the true story of what had happened to the family members, now all gone.

The early 1900's were hard times. Women were often left to carry the burden of children from lost loves. Men left to try to find the fortunes that they knew they were due. Some found them; most did not. Devil's Pocket presents the drama behind those lustful times. McKinley may have written the fiction; but readers will easily and quickly believe that all of the events could easily have been real. He has created characters you will hate immediately. Some are crafty and selfish and want their own way. Others love and work hard to provide for their families. They were killed due to greed, love, pride, but most of all, fear.

Readers interested in historical fiction will find this a well-written, well-researched story of the time when black gold fever touched our lands. Devil's Pocket, hopefully, will not be the last story about this time period. This reader is already looking for a McKinley sequel!

A Great Novel

Fred McKinley's Devil's Pocket vividly captures the aura of an oil boomtown in early twentieth-century Southeast Texas with memorable characters and an intricate plot that covers more than a century. This novel is hard to put down. It held my attention from beginning to end as it built up to a horrifying and shocking climax. I highly recommend Devil's Pocket to anyone who enjoys an intergenerational, suspenseful saga set in an important era of American history that has been much less used in fiction than the Civil War and World War II time-periods. A person who reads Devil's Pocket will gain much insight into the culture of the period in which our civilization changed from being limited to horse-and-buggy-type transportation to being powered by oil and gasoline.
