Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood

Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey–with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake–through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. Margaret Atwood projects us into a near future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining.

Amazon.com Review
In Oryx and Crake, a science fiction novel that is more Swift than Heinlein, more cautionary tale than "fictional science" (no flying cars here), Margaret Atwood depicts a near-future world that turns from the merely horrible to the horrific, from a fool's paradise to a bio-wasteland. Snowman (a man once known as Jimmy) sleeps in a tree and just might be the only human left on our devastated planet. He is not entirely alone, however, as he considers himself the shepherd of a group of experimental, human-like creatures called the Children of Crake. As he scavenges and tends to his insect bites, Snowman recalls in flashbacks how the world fell apart.

While the story begins with a rather ponderous set-up of what has become a clichd landscape of the human endgame, littered with smashed computers and abandoned buildings, it takes on life when Snowman recalls his boyhood meeting with his best friend Crake: "Crake had a thing about him even then.... He generated awe ... in his dark laconic clothing." A dangerous genius, Crake is the book's most intriguing character. Crake and Jimmy live with all the other smart, rich people in the Compounds--gated company towns owned by biotech corporations. (Ordinary folks are kept outside the gates in the chaotic "pleeblands.") Meanwhile, beautiful Oryx, raised as a child prostitute in Southeast Asia, finds her way to the West and meets Crake and Jimmy, setting up an inevitable love triangle. Eventually Crake's experiments in bioengineering cause humanity's shockingly quick demise (with uncanny echoes of SARS, ebola, and mad cow disease), leaving Snowman to try to pick up the pieces. There are a few speed bumps along the way, including some clunky dialogue and heavy-handed symbols such as Snowman's broken watch, but once the bleak narrative gets moving, as Snowman sets out in search of the laboratory that seeded the world's destruction, it clips along at a good pace, with a healthy dose of wry humor. --Mark Frutkin, Amazon.ca

From Publishers Weekly
Atwood has visited the future before, in her dystopian novel, The Handmaid's Tale. In her latest, the future is even bleaker. The triple whammy of runaway social inequality, genetic technology and catastrophic climate change, has finally culminated in some apocalyptic event. As Jimmy, apparently the last human being on earth, makes his way back to the RejoovenEsencecompound for supplies, the reader is transported backwards toward that cataclysmic event, its full dimensions gradually revealed. Jimmy grew up in a world split between corporate compounds (gated communities metastasized into city-states) and pleeblands (unsafe, populous and polluted urban centers). His best friend was "Crake," the name originally his handle in an interactive Net game, Extinctathon. Even Jimmy's mother-who ran off and joined an ecology guerrilla group when Jimmy was an adolescent-respected Crake, already a budding genius. The two friends first encountered Oryx on the Net; she was the eight-year-old star of a pedophilic film on a site called HottTotts. Oryx's story is a counterpoint to Jimmy and Crake's affluent adolescence. She was sold by her Southeast Asian parents, taken to the city and eventually made into a sex "pixie" in some distant country. Jimmy meets Oryx much later-after college, after Crake gets Jimmy a job with ReJoovenEsence. Crake is designing the Crakers-a new, multicolored placid race of human beings, smelling vaguely of citron. He's procured Oryx to be his personal assistant. She teaches the Crakers how to cope in the world and goes out on secret missions. The mystery on which this riveting, disturbing tale hinges is how Crake and Oryx and civilization vanished, and how Jimmy-who also calls himself "the Snowman," after that other rare, hunted specimen, the Abominable Snowman-survived. Chesterton once wrote of the "thousand romances that lie secreted in The Origin of Species." Atwood has extracted one of the most hair-raising of them, and one of the most brilliant.

From Booklist
Surely Atwood deserved a respite after The Blind Assassin (2000) won the Booker Prize, but the muse had more to say, hence this hijack-intense speculative novel, sister to one of Atwood's most indelible works, The Handmaid's Tale (1985). Jimmy is struggling to stay alive on a wreckage-littered Earth besieged by a brutal sun and overrun with smart and vicious test-tube-bred predators. Now calling himself Snowman (as in Abominable), he's preparing for an arduous scavenger expedition back to the formerly high-tech compound in which he lived and worked until the bioengineering industry ran amok and a catastrophic event put an end to civilization. Snowman is desperately lonely, but he isn't actually alone since he serves as guru for a strangely passive tribe unaware of the lost world of computers, bullet trains, Web porn, gene-splicing, and the plagues that Snowman so vividly and regretfully recalls. As Snowman remembers his friend, Crake, an emotionally remote genius, as well as the love of Snowman's life, an enigmatic survivor of childhood sexual abuse called Oryx, Atwood conjures a grim, all-too-plausible future in order to consider the possibly devastating consequences of our present ill-advised biotech pursuits. Rigorous in its chilling insights and riveting in its fast-paced "what if" dramatization, Atwood's superb novel is as brilliantly provocative as it is profoundly engaging. Donna Seaman

Atwood has done better
By Chelsea K.
Margaret Atwood is easily one of my favorite authors. Some of her books had me at the edge of my seat. I remember as a kid reading under the covers with a flashlight because it was past my bed time and I would get in trouble otherwise.
This book is just not like that. I’ve had a much harder time getting attached to these characters and wanting to know what happens next. I’ve been reading it for a couple months now on and off. It’s very interesting and of course it is beautifully written (as anything Margaret Atwood is) but it’s just hard to figure out what is going on.
I’m about halfway through the book now…and I suppose it would be better to finish it before writing a review but…it’s so hard to read without falling asleep. I couldn’t even tell you what the plot is yet. It is interesting at some points but I am just not sure where it is going…if it is going anywhere.
Although still a good book…just not what I expected from an author like Margaret Atwood and with so many good reviews. Maybe I’m just not reading it right or something. When a book is a best seller you do expect it to have a certain value to it that appeals to a broad audience and I just do not think this book has it. If I had to watch this as a movie I would probably fall asleep in the middle which is where most movies/books are just getting good!

Patience, grasshopper
By Cori Dyson
This book was hard for me to get into. I'm not sure why. I started and stopped numerous times. When I finally finished it, I was glad I did. The book doesn't really grab you until about middle of the book. When it grabs you, it really grabs you, so consider yourself warned!

This has excellent theme and is thought provoking. While the plot is slow to develop, the second half of the book makes up for the first half. If you can have patience, then you will be rewarded with an excellent story.

This Little Piggy Went To Market
By The Parentals
A team of scientists proposed two techniques that could enable edible meat to be grown in laboratories on an industrial scale. One method involves growing sheets of meat cells on scaffolding, which would then be stretched and stacked to increase thickness, the other requires creating "structured muscle tissue as self-organizing constructs," which would then be harvested and turned into hamburger or nuggets. "The challenge," said one meat scientist "is getting the texture right. We have to figure out how to `exercise' the muscle cells."

Very funny Jewish Joke

I have been reading science fiction since I was twelve years old. I've read just about everything, except more recently because I am getting older and find so much of science fiction just repeating itself. New ideas are getting harder and harder to find.

One recent reviewer didn't think that Oryx and Crake qualified as good sci-fi because good sci-fi requires depth of character. He must be kidding. You have to look long and hard for character development in sci-fi. The problem with most science fiction today is the people who write the stuff fancy themselves Artists and claim that sci-fi is great literature. So they say.

Here's the rub: Oryx and Crake is science fiction. There is no doubt about it. But more importantly, Margaret Atwood is not a science fiction writer. Science fiction writers are the first to attest to that. To let Margaret Atwood into their hallowed self-congratulatory circle would mean setting a standard that few are capable of equaling.

Oryx and Crake is filled with character development. The story is about us. And because of that there is nothing very special about Jimmy. Jimmy is your typical self absorbed human being. Margaret Atwood does a wonderful job of showing us how rank we are capable of becoming as we consume everything in sight, and in the process pollute the very form and essence of life. Everything will turn to kaka, and we will find ways to consume even that. So, when you find out what a Pigoon is for, or what a ChickieNob is, go ahead and laugh, it's hilarious. Die laughing.

For years, science fiction writers have brought us broadside attacks on consumerism and corporate absurdity. Science fiction is loaded with satire, but too often it's about Them. We are endlessly invaded from without. In the end, we will have done it to ourselves. The meek aren't going to inherit the Earth, they will destroy it.

Would you like fries with that?

A Handful of Good Material
By lykanthrope
The book is geared toward a Matte Painting field than 3D Modeling/Rendering. Of the better tutorials, it gets into the nitty-gritty of setting up your materials, your various render passes, but there are only a few of them in there. The lesser tutorials show you the settings for what they did and not really why they did it.

My main concern is that a good chunk of the showcase images look unrealistically CG'd--when the language of the elements don't align. Perhaps "Mayhem" is the correct term. It's a smattering of some good stuff with unpolished filler in between.

A mixed bag
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:4389c6a6a1b3569aa3493b97f2c3713c]]Digital Mayhem 3D Landscape Techniques is a book for digital artists interested in creating 3d landscapes and environment. It's a mixed bag as far as I'm concerned.

The book's divided into three sections.

The first section talks about the previz considerations, basically stuff like composition, camera lens, lighting, art direction etc.

The second section forms the bulk of the book. There are 13 chapters each dedicated to a specific type of environment, e.g. mountains, seascapes, industrial, etc. The chapters would showcase several artworks from artists with included quotes and information like what software was used, rendering time, etc. The chapters then end with a step-by-step tutorial that looks at the process of creating a particular environment.

Just in case you're interested to find out the 3D software used in the tutorials for the chapters, they are:

Mountains - Vue 10 Infinite
Seascapes - 3ds Max, Zbrush
Rivers and Lakes - Vue 10.5 Infinite
Water features - Vue 11 Complete, Daz Studio 4.5
Desert Scenes - Maya
Woodlands - Vue 11 Infinite
Architecture Visualisation - 3ds Max
Characters in landscape - 3ds Max
Urban Landscapes - Maya
Weather and seasons - 3ds Max
Post-industrial - Lightwave3D
Sci-fi - 3ds Max, Vue
Fantasy - Studio Max, Lightwave, Zbrush
As for the quality of work showcased, there are some good works that look really natural as well as those that feel very CG. The tutorials are quite insightful though with helpful tips, but that would apply more if you're also using the same software.

The last section is on post production. You'll learn stuff like adding things in post, using filters and other effects. The more essential information are already handled in the tutorials.

Books that feature too many software always run the risk of alienating those using other softwares, and I think that's the case here. I use Maya and don't particularly care about the tutorials using Vue, and as you can see from the list above there are only two tutorials for Maya.

(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Content Full
By G. Stapleton
This is a very "meaty" book. Lot of information creating environments in 3D applications. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Vue content in there. Not too many books touch on that application. From composition to atmosphere this book contains it all. And its all in color. Love it. Very good investment!

Focusing on theories of verbal symbolism, Tzvetan Todorov here presents a history of semiotics. From an account of the semiotic doctrines embodied in the works of classical rhetoric to an exploration of representative modern concepts of the symbol found in ethnology, psychoanalysis, linguistics, and poetics, Todorov examines the rich tradition of sign theory. In the course of his discussion Todorov treats the works of such writers as Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, Augustine, Condillac, Lessing, Diderot, Goethe, Novalis, the Schlegel brothers, Levy-Bruhl, Freud, Saussure, and Jakobson.

Review

"This very good translation is the most important study of symbolism to appear in English since Angus Fletcher's Allegory: The Theory of a Symbolic Mode. A learned and far-reaching book."―Choice

"Todorov has always had a talent for providing useful books, and here, as always, he is extremely clear. . . . This is one of his better books, presenting a variety of information with clarity and intelligence."―Times Literary Supplement

"Theories of the Symbol initiates a major methodological (re)turn: the move away from structuralist-semiotic tendencies to other forms of literary philosophy and history. It is this change of critical terrain which no doubt will direct us toward redefining and determining the future modes of literary theory. On this point, Todorov is, as usual, ahead of the game." ―Modern Language Notes

If you still appreciate the jokes of Andrew Dice Clay, go for it. On the other hand, if you're a senior citizen like me and start telling these jokes in public (I did this in a bar near where the movie Gone Girl was shot) you are at great peril for being pummeled for political incorrectness to the point that you may be rendered an invalid.

The Sovereignty of Good, by Iris Murdoch

Iris Murdoch once observed: 'philosophy is often a matter of finding occasions on which to say the obvious'. What was obvious to Murdoch, and to all those who read her work, is that Good transcends everything - even God. Throughout her distinguished and prolific writing career, she explored questions of Good and Bad, myth and morality. The framework for Murdoch's questions - and her own conclusions - can be found here.

Do not buy this edition. Buy the collection "Existentialists and Mystics" instead.
By Hypatian
While the essays in "The Sovereignty of Good" are definitely worth reading, I wish I would not have bought them in this edition. Routledge is asking $15 for this book. I have found numerous typographical errors, which is inexcusable given that the book has been reprinted many times since 2001. Additionally, it contains no new notes or introductions. It is merely a reprinting of 1970 version of the text. Finally, the physical book just feels a bit cheap. Really, for the price and from this publisher, I expected more.

I recently discovered that for just a few dollars more, I could have bought "Existentialists and Mystics"(Penguin, 2001). It contains the text of "The Sovereignty of the Good" along with nearly two dozen additional essays by Murdoch. The editors have also included explanatory notes which will be helpful for readers who have limited knowledge of mid-twentieth century philosophy. For instance, when Murdoch discusses McTaggart and Hampshire in "The Idea of Perfection", she does not offer full citations for the essays and books she references (at least such citations are not included in the Routledge reprinting). The editors of "Existentialists and Mystics" include the citations and offer brief notes about books and authors. Simple? Yes, but also time-saving. (Who wants to do a Google search in the middle of reading a good argument?)

Anyway, I will be buying "Existentialists and Mystics" in short order. I'll use the Routledge either as my mark-up or lend-out copy of the text. But I recommend you save yourself the trouble and buy the right book the first time.

Difficult but Worthwhile
By James Henderson
The nature of goodness is an issue today in the writings of Iris Murdoch. The Sovereignty of Good includes three essays by her. In reading her essay, "The Sovereignty of Good over other concepts", I found her returning to the allegory of the cave and the metaphor of the Sun that I first read in Plato. Murdoch claims that "'Good is a transcendent reality' means that virtue is the attempt to pierce the veil of selfish consciousness and join the world as it really is." (p 91) For Murdoch this is a claim that Art is the way that humans can reach this unity in that,
"The mind which has ascended to the vision of the Good can subsequently see concepts through which it has ascended (art, work, nature, people, ideas, institutions, situations, etc.) in their true nature and in their proper relationships to each other." (p 92)
The discussion of the good by Iris Murdoch reconsiders this and other themes found in Marcus Aurelius and Plato. It is a difficult but worthwhile read.

The return of Platonic realism
By Kevin Davis
It might seem odd that the other review of this book ('Lucid and brilliant') describes her moral philosophy as "a kind of Anglican conservatism" since Dame Iris was an atheist. However, I have to agree that she could largely stand in the tradition of Bishop Joseph Butler (1692-1752), the great Anglican theologian and philosopher, who largely represents what might be considered traditional English or Anglican moral ethics. The similarities are due to the fact that Murdoch, while an atheist, was not a materialist by any means. She was a Platonist -- in about as pure a sense as you can imagine -- and Platonism was/is highly influential in Anglican (not to mention, Roman Catholic) thought. While she does tweak Plato a bit, her moral realism is amazingly congruent with that of Plato. For instance, she speaks much of the Good as that which we must direct our attention and even love towards. Naturally, she attacks the dominant moral theories of the modern era -- deontological/Kantian and utilitatarian ethics -- in much the same way that G.E.M. Anscombe did in her essay, "Modern Moral Philosophy" (1958), which revived virtue ethics. If you enjoy Miss Anscombe or other similar, pro-metaphysical moral philosophers of the 20th century (such as Simone Weil or Alasdair MacIntyre), then you will surely enjoy this book.

In 1992, Iris Murdoch (who mostly wrote novels) expanded her ideas on ethics in her book, 'Metaphysics As a Guide to Morals.' This is a much larger work and would greatly benefit from reading The Sovereignty of Good first. All of her essential moral concepts are found in The Sovereignty of Good, in a clear and succinct manner. However, her views, like all philosophies, are not without criticisms. The best collection of critical (both positive and negative) essays on her work is 'Iris Murdoch and the Search for Human Goodness,' which was born out of a conference on Iris Murdoch held at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago in 1994. It includes essays by some of today's leading moral philosophers and theologians, including Charles Taylor, Martha Nussbaum, Stanley Hauerwas, and William Schweiker. For a full treatment of Iris Murdoch's moral philosophy, see Maria Antonaccio's 'Picturing the Human: The Moral Thought of Iris Murdoch.' Both of these books are excellent and essential for anyone doing an academic study of Dame Iris.

Father Ed Dowling: Bill Wilson's Sponsor, by Glenn F. Chesnut

The story of Father Ed Dowling, S.J., the Jesuit priest who served for twenty years as sponsor and spiritual guide to Bill Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

An icy evening in December 1940 saw the first meeting of two extraordinary spiritual leaders. Father Ed said that the graces he received from meeting Bill Wilson were as great as those he had received from his ordination as a priest, and Bill in turn described encountering the Jesuit as being like a second conversion experience, where he could feel the transcendent presence of God filling the entire room with grace. The good priest taught Wilson about St. Ignatius Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises, about the eternal battle between good and evil which the Spanish saint described in that book, and explained the Jesuit understanding of the way we can use our deepest emotions to receive guidance from God while serving on that battlefield. The co-founder of the twelve step movement in turn supplied Father Ed with some of the most valuable tools he possessed for carrying out small group therapy on a wide range of different kinds of troubled people.

Together the two men discussed Poulain’s Graces of Interior Prayer and Bill’s attempts to make spiritual contact with both spooks and saints, and explored the world of LSD experiences and the teachings of the Catholic, Hindu, and Buddhist mystics in Aldous Huxley’s Perennial Philosophy.

And we will see how Father Ed, with his deep social conscience, helped Bill W. turn his book on the Twelve Traditions into a Bill of Rights for the twelve step movement, and how he laid out his own spiritual vision of Alcoholics Anonymous at the A.A. International in St. Louis in 1955.

Using this book in my college class
By Frank W. McCroy
This book is being used in my Intro to Geography class. It is a softcover book, that is fairly easy to read, and has lots of beautiful looking full color pictures and maps. The only drawback for me is the price of the text, since it is a brand new edition, and I could not find any used copies.
