First class historical anthropology!

This well researched, professionally written text is up to date (2013) with respect to findings and chock full of detail, including, in some cases, useful photographs and/or schematic drawings. Not at all limited to predictable references to well known historical details, this book attempts with some considerable success to elaborate explanations or theoretical accounts for the considerable strangeness of what we know about Inca society in ancient times. It will not allow readers to content themselves with inserting our modern and Western presuppositions about institutional categories (e.g. church, state, economy, etc.), but recasts these into a model that is simultaneously more integrated (and more complex for us, due to its strangeness, its distance in time, and its distortions created by the imposition of the Spanish conquistadors and Roman Catholic Church. Read it slowly to absorb the richness of its detail. First class!

Essential reading

I follow Alan Kolata's work in South America and have for years. His work on Tiwanaku and Bolivia is unparalleled. Now, he does a capstone review of the Inca which is essential reading for professionals and amateurs (like me). In the last twenty years, so much work has been done in Bolivia, Chile, coastal Peru, pre-Inca and the Inca. It was time for this overview of the material. As always, there are recommendations for how the work must go forward, as well.

While I have enjoyed it at times

As a young female in my twenties, dating has been quite the experience. While I have enjoyed it at times, I have always felt like I was going into each experience somewhat blind, not knowing if the moves I was making were going to land me the man I wanted or just another broken heart. As each experience came to an end, I'd find myself wondering, “What the hell just happened? What went wrong, and where did it wrong?” Naturally, these questions lead me to read about the things I was experiencing in order to get the answers I needed. Not surprisingly, what I was going through had been experienced by many people, both men and women, in dating. The internet is full of information about the do's and don'ts of dating, but rarely is all the information you need to be successful in love all in one place. Often times I would find myself reading things where the author claimed that her solutions were the keys to success, but once you started reading there was little practical implementation and a lot of vague ideas about male and female energy, just as one example. In Love Factually, not only will you find a step by step road map to get you to success, but you will also find the scientific backing and research to go along with each step. There is nothing vague in this book. Dr. Duana C. Welch uses a charming and witty writing style which makes this book in particular hard to put down. It's not all facts and figures though; as Dr. Welch includes both examples from her own personal life and from those she has helped through the process, which gives her book a personal touch and makes it relatable to whoever is reading it. I'm happy to have found this book and have already spoken with many of my friends about it. When you find something this good, you cannot keep it to yourself.

Outstanding, pleasurable, impactful book!

Even though I was warned not to read this book in the introduction (I am happily married), I eagerly tore into and read Love Factually as soon as it was available. I was not disappointed. I have followed Duana Welch's blog for several years when as a young single father, I was struggling with many questions about the poor choices I was making. Fortunately, a grad school friend sent me a column of hers, and I have read it regularly since.

Love Factually exemplifies the best aspects of Duana’s writing. It is personal, funny, and direct. I see my journey in the stories inspired by countless people who have written and dialogued with Duana over the years. I was amused and delighted, but I was also informed. Duana’s work represents a summary of the best psychological research available.

Because of our many conversations over the years, and from reading her columns from the beginning, I am a more intentional communicator. I have a better understanding of my own needs and desires from my marriage and those of my wife. In short, I am a better husband than otherwise I would have been.

If you want another book that treats dating and sex like a game to try and manipulate potential partners, keep going. This book is not for you. If, on the other hand, you understand that finding and choosing a mate determines our happiness and well-bring more than almost any other process of our lives, then buy this book, settle down, and get ready for an enjoyable, impactful read.

I'm a guy - divorced for 10 years now. In the course of trying to figure out what went wrong and how I could relate better to a woman, I read a lot of advice sources. Everything from Doc Love to How to Prevent Your Divorce. I'm not sure any of this stuff helped (especially that last one).

But about 5 years ago I stumbled across the LoveScience blog by Dr. Duana Welch. Her writing was different from the other love advice columns and books I'd seen. For one, it was humorous without being crass. It wasn't The Rules, and it wasn't combat dating for guys. Dr. D was writing about actual scientific studies and I found them to be eerily accurate . . . they were making sense about the way that women and men behaved when interacting with each other.

I found out that my attachment style would make it harder for me - check. The book pointed out that differences may seem attractive initially, but that similar people actually made better friends and eventually lovers. I paid special attention to the explanations about what makes a woman interested in a man and what keeps her interested. And I agreed with her conclusions about what a man wants from a woman - check again. The link between our development as humans and how we view men and women today . . . fascinating to me.

The chapter on "you need to break up with someone who doesn't fit your true love profile" was a bit sobering. Because I would tend to want to remain in a relationship even when my gut (or my heart, that's it) was saying "this isn't feeling right." I have to admit, I think she's right and I think more people should hold out for their best match. There would be a lot more happy partnerships if they would.

I posted a lot of my observations at the LoveScience blog, and Dr. Welch received them with courtesy, humor and thoughtfulness. I think she likes picking the brains of all of us as we "experiment" with love every day. Anyway, it's a pretty cool book. I'd say it clears up a whole lot of things about how women and men love. Might as well use these insights to one's own advantage.

About the Author
STEVE YOUNG�is regarded as one of the greatest college and pro football players of all time.�After a stellar career at Brigham Young University, the left-handed quarterback played professionally for more than fifteen years in the NFL, primarily with the San Francisco 49ers. He received numerous accolades during his playing days, including being named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXIX, Sports Illustrated�and Sporting News�Player of the Year from 1992–1994, and the NFL's Most Valuable Player for 1992 and 1994.�In 2005, Young was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is one of the top-rated quarterbacks in NFL history. These days, in addition to his ongoing on-air work with ESPN’s Monday Night Football and his commitment to a number of charitable endeavors, Young is a managing director and cofounder�of HGGC, a private equity fund based in San Francisco. As well as his undergraduate degree, Young also holds a law degree from BYU. He lives with his wife and family in Palo Alto.

Jeff Benedict�is an author, a special features writer for�Sports Illustrated, and a television and film producer. Amazing book that I could not put down! It;s an instant all time favorite.

What an awesome book! It has quickly become one of my all time favorites, and I am an avid reader. I absolutely loved learning more about Steve Young. His battle with anxiety was particularly helpful for me, as I have a child who also struggles with anxiety. It helped me understand more of what my own child is going through. Steve's humility is inspiring, and I loved the stories of the simple life he led. His tenacity is remarkable, and it was nice to get an inside peek at the injuries that NFL players deal with and play through on a daily basis. I was also super impressed by his wife and love the self confidence she displayed, and I'm so happy that he finally found what he was looking for. Another key takeaway from this book was how Steve handled retirement. He said he knew he would no longer be good at football, so he needed something else to be good at. This has stuck with me and is a great reminder to me as I transition through different times in my life.

I started by listening to the audio version, which is read by Steve himself. I think it adds so much when the author reads the book, and I really enjoyed listening to him. I liked it enough to also buy a hard copy of the book, and I couldn't put it down. What an awesome read.

Talk about endurance

I've always heard that football players play through pain, but this book was a real eye opener in terms of the amount and variety of pain they can play through. It's a miracle that he hasn't shown any effects from CTE. I pray that continues to be the case.

It was also refreshing to read about someone so successful having had to deal with anxiety all his life.

Fantastic Book by Steve Young with Jeff Benedict

I am reading this book as I share this review. I have been a fan of Steve Young since 1980. I have watched every football game he has been in that was possible for me to see. I have so much memorabilia show casing his years in collegiate and professional football. For some reason, I have not only been drawn to his exceptional talents and skills as a football player but also his integrity, character, and faith-driven attributes which lifted him head and shoulders above so many professional athletes who appeared solely caught up in their lofty self-opinion. I have read and kept many articles about him, and my family, through the years, have shared in my admiration of him and his many talents.

This book is written from the heart. He expresses, with admirable honesty, the challenges he faced throughout his life which tormented him and almost emotionally paralyzed him Yet, he found the strength and determination to rise above his constraints and become a great athlete and a great man.

I am mesmerized by his honesty, his achievements, and his trust in Deity to guide him through the torments and disappointments of his amazing efforts and ultimately help him reach his Mount Everest.

I so love this book. I am eternally thankful that he has made the choice to share his private struggles and triumphs with those of us who are his greatest of fans and admirers. What a great gift he offers to us who have followed his life for 36 years, or more, like I have. He really is the impetus behind my acquisition of a unabashed love for the game as a fan of great athletes who demonstrate similar levels of integrity and devotion to their craft. He will always be a hero to me, and this book will take the place on my bookshelf as a treasured and valued reminder of this great man and all he has accomplished and stands for. Thank you for the many years of excitement, enjoyment, nervous tension, anxiety, and inspiration you generated for us, your fans, Steve. I always wanted to meet you and thank you for the years of joy and pleasure you brought into our home. Blessings to your sweet family and yourself, always.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Frederick Nolan, a.k.a. ‘Frederick H. Christian’, was born in Liverpool, England and was educated there and at Aberaeron in Wales. He decided early in life to become a writer, but it was some thirty years before he got around to achieving his ambition. His first book was The Life and Death of John Henry Tunstall, and along the way he became an authority on the history of the American frontier, founder of The English Westerners' Society, and something of a connoisseur of western fiction in the days when it was a flourishing literary genre.

In addition to the Angel westerns, Fred also wrote five entries in the popular ‘Sudden’ series started by Oliver Strange. Among his numerous books is the best-selling The Oshawa Project (published as The Algonquin Project in the US) which was later filmed by MGM as Brass Target, starring Sophia Loren, John Cassavetes, Max von Sydow, George Kennedy, and Robert Vaughn.

A leading authority on the outlaws and gunfighters of the Old West, he has scripted and appeared in many television programs both in England and in the United States, and authored numerous articles in historical and other academic publications. His award-winning books on Southwestern frontier history include The Life and Death of John Henry Tunstall (1965), The Lincoln County War: A Documentary History (a New York Times ‘Book of the Year’ in 1992), Bad Blood: The Life and Times of the Horrell Brothers (1994), The West of Billy the Kid (1998), an annotated edition of Pat Garrett’s Authentic Life of Billy the Kid (2000), and a popular introduction to the history of the frontier, The Wild West: History, Myth and the Making of America, published in 2003.

Pippa is not reinventing the wheel for entertaining

As the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa Middleton is in an unenviable situation. In many ways, she cannot win and it is unfortunate that to some, she will always be known as the only maid of honor to ever wear a flattering dress. Never judged on her own efforts, but on the media and public perception of her. Celebrate: A Year of Festivities for Families and Friends, is her attempt to change that.

Given her low profile prior to the royal wedding, Celebrate could be viewed as a premature effort. However, she's not the first person to jump on the bandwagon of her own notoriety nor will she be the last. To Pippa's credit, she acknowledges this in the introduction to Celebrate. She has the opportunity and she's taking advantage of it. By admitting this she makes it redundant for those who scoff at her efforts. Now who is being unoriginal?

Several reviews for this book have criticized Pippa for stating the obvious: 'ice goes great with drinks', 'a turkey at Christmas time is good for large gatherings'. Yes, it's true but let's be honest, even Martha Stewart falls back on 'Pumpkins add to the festive atmosphere of Halloween', 'Hearts make perfect Valentines' and 'Easter egg hunts are fun'. What Pippa does add to the field is her youth. Like her sister, she makes going the extra mile fashionable. Thus giving twenty-somethings options other than beer, wine, tortilla chips and brie cheese trays for their own parties.

Divided by seasons, Pippa presents crafts, recipes, nostalgic/traditional games and charming tidbits of trivia appropriate to the occasion. She also offers small glimpses into how her family celebrated events like Easter and Mothers Day. While her tips for building bonfires may not apply to most of her readers, some of the game instructions are hard to follow (Conker fights?) and hanging donuts from trees may be an attempt for the brave, her instructions for creating Christmas decorations and place settings using simple items can be for those willing to make the effort. Very reassuring for craft-challenged people like me.

With Celebrate, Pippa Middleton is not reinventing the wheel for entertaining. Instead her book is a fine attempt at reinterpreting it.

A failure in editing

Pippa Middleton took a lot of flack for her book, but as an editor myself, I believe that the flaw is on the editorial side. The basic set-up of the book (by seasons and traditional British events) is useful. I enjoyed the Burns Night section, plus other tidbits like how to make a "Christmas cracker."

Unfortunately, the book is bloated, with equal weight given to the mundane and the interesting. I understand that Pippa wanted to publish an accessible book, but it's almost never a good idea to talk down to the reader. Martha Stewart gets away with it because she's Martha Stewart; i.e., she has good reason to assume her readers can't live up to her example. In Pippa's case, I don't get it. Bobbing for apples, capture the flag, turkey for Christmas?

If I were editing the book, I'd suggest the following organization within sections:

* First, a simple list of the traditional British ways of doing things, without the play by play of every familiar game, decoration, or menu item. We can cut out paper hearts for Valentines and apply glitter without instructions, thanks.

* Full instructions for original/unusual ideas only. These are good as is but get lost among pages of "tie balloons to chairs and hang streamers."

* A feature on events that Pippa actually made special. In her Guardian article, she mentioned throwing a white-clothing-only party, a Scandinavian-themed party, and others. Why aren't those in the book? We want to read about how she *actually* parties, not how she wants the little people, I mean readers, to party.

* A smattering of only the most special and personal recipes. This is the Internet age after all. Does Nigella Lawson or Ina Garten already supply a recipe for it? Free? Online? Then we don't need to read yours unless it's something amazing.

* Finally, suggestions for how to develop new traditions. For people who aren't interested in a Burns Night, why not suggest choosing a beloved writer from your own culture and planning some complementary dishes to serve alongside a fireside reading? What else can go in a Christmas cracker? What other traditional dances should we try to revive?

Overall, I enjoyed parts of this book, but I finished feeling a bit duped. Maybe Pippa truly spends her life as a character in a 19th century novel, complete with reel dancing, lawn games, and bicycling to picnic locales, never a cell phone or computer in sight. I'm suspicious there's a lot more yachting, skiing, Prada shopping, and hobnobbing, though. Too bad. The truth would have made for a better book.

A comprehensive guide for home parties

Ms. Middleton's book does an excellent job of providing accessible recipes and easy to make crafts for any reader who is planning a home party.

This purpose of this book is to help a host plan a fun and thoughtful event for a small group of close friends. This book is not a blueprint for multi million dollar events, and it is clearly presented to be no such book. It is, however, my new go-to reference for any seasonal gathering I host.

One major benefit of this book is that is considers both children's and adult's activities ideas. Since most families consist of members ranging in age, it is very appropriate for family party planning.

Everything from the photography to the paper choice has been carefully curated in this book. Excellent book, I can't wait for a follow-up from Ms. Middleton.

'The Errant Prince'

Even in a fantasy world, people have certain ideas of appropriate behavior. Myron and Tamsen, of 'The Errant Prince' by Sasha L. Miller, are viewed for who they appear to be rather than who they are. Myron and Tamsen have cleverly found a way to overcome the roadblocks other people try to put in their paths; they've learned to shine in their own way and are determined to continue to do so together, with any luck.

One of Myron's strong points is that he never underestimates the challenges that lie before him. When he's assigned to bring back a prince who has forsaken his royalty, he approaches the task with eyes wide open. Myron doesn't assume that just because Tamsen is a prince he will behave like one, and this assumption proves to be correct. Instead of trying to use force, Myron takes his time and earns Tamsen's respect. Since Myron doesn't behave like the other soldiers who have come to drag the prince back home, Tamsen is more prone to listen to him. As their mutual respect grows, Myron and Tamsen learn that they have a lot more in common that they first thought. This forms another bond which helps move them from potential captor and prisoner to friendship and the possibility for more.

Tamsen runs away from his princely duties seeking a more simple life, away from the crushing expectations of his position and an ex-lover determined to marry him, not because of love, but for the prestige it will give him. Tamsen is much more capable than his brother, the king, presents him to be. Tamsen is tired of being told what he can and can't do and how he is supposed to feel. He's quite resourceful both in magic and in the daily tasks necessary for survival. Tamsen likes his solitude, but he is lonely. When Myron comes around, Tamsen thinks that he is like all of the other inept men his brother has sent to talk sense into him and bring Tamsen home; but soon realizes Myron is so much more. The night before they leave, it's obvious that their affection for each other is something they both want to explore further, but they also know when Tamsen is back at the castle, things will change drastically regardless of what he wants.

This is a sweet love story, told in a fairy-tale style, which adds interest, color, and magic to the mix. Tamsen and Myron are both strong, admirable characters whose affection is tangible. There isn't any huge conflict in the story, but there was enough political intrigue to hold my interest. If you like magic, princes, castles, court politics, pushing limits, and, of course, love, then you may enjoy reading this story.

Short, sweet and lovely

I loved this little novella. It’s a sweet, easy read with a couple of likable characters in a lovely fantasy setting. Myron is great – a soldier sent out to fetch home a spoilt brat of a prince, but what he finds when he finally tracks Tamsen down is definitely not what he’s expecting. Far from the pampered little princeling of rumour, Tamsen instead lives alone right out in the country in a small cottage with a large herb garden. The last thing he wants to do is leave his home and return to the city, but Myron is not like the other men who’ve been sent to track the prince down. Instead he’s calm, patient and willing to work in exchange for being taught new spells.

I loved how much Myron baffled Tamsen. He’s so easy going, he rarely gets upset and when he does it’s every bit as surprising as all the times he let stuff go. He’s so centered and sure of himself, despite all the problems he’s had with his parents and his woeful magical education. I loved his curiosity and the way he treats Tamsen as a person, not a prince, and how he goes after what he wants in such a patient, steady way without any pressure.

The story is split into two halves – the first is from Myron’s pov as he tracks Tamsen down and tries to convince him to go home, the second is all Tamsen as he tries to sort out his life. I really liked getting to see inside both their heads and how they viewed the other, though I would have liked more Myron time towards the end.

Mixing a bit of court politics in with love, status and personal identity as well as the high cost of family acceptance, this book is a real delight. There’s nothing explicit in it at all, beyond some kisses and flirting and a lot of blushing on Tamsen’s part. He might start off as starchy and rude, but by the end I loved him. He’s socially awkward but actually really sweet, and the way he approaches his relationship with Myron is adorable. I am jealous of his cottage and garden, though.

Short, sweet and lovely, I will definitely be reading this one again. If you like magic, love, a tiny bit of political machinations and a couple of characters who are perfect for each other, then you should enjoy this. The fact that it also included a trans character was pure icing on the cake. I’ll be looking out for more from this author.

I got this book through Booklending and read through it quickly in a day - it's a very fast read. For such a short book, a disproportionate amount of text is spent on teaching magic versus developing a relationship. I think it's Ms. Miller's writing style that relationships just seem to happen with little explanation or background (a smile, a look, and then, bam, the characters are fully committed to each other). Why Tamsen ran away was rather weak, to me. This isn't a book I would re-read as there just isn't any deeper character traits to ponder as I read it a second time. The gender non-conforming issue apparently wasn't an issue for anyone, which was at least interesting.

Great introduction to the basics

This book covers the basics of mass spectra, and how to interpret them by hand. While it doesn't reallly go into modern developments, its certainly a great way to get started thinking about mass spectroscopy in general. Probably most useful for an undergras course in spectroscopy, which is where I first came across it. The nice thing is it has lots of exercises for the reader that are actually alot of fun. Does not, unfortunately, address protein identification and sequencing by mass spec at al, so while I recommend this book as a starting point, a biologically oriented reader would best use this book in conjunction with a more protein-specific reference.

Classic Book for Mass Spectrometry

The book is commonly used as a text book on Mass Spectrometry at graduate or undergraduate level. Very nice for organic mass spectrometry. I even read a Chinese version back home.
The examples are good, exercises have answers at the end of book: great for self-practicing. It is too bad that this book does not cover the currently very hot biological mass spectrometry. Anyway this is a book you have to read at least twice if you want to be in the field of mass spectrometry.

Beginners text

A good introduction to classical mass spectrometry though most of the recent developments in the field are not covered. Most suitable for undergraduates. This edition corrects some of the organizational blunders in earlier forms ; previously a chapter on "Other Ionization Techniques" included sections on negative ions and icrs (?).
