THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
In the most candid and compelling sports memoir since Andre Agassi’s riveting bestseller Open, former San Francisco 49er, Super Bowl champion, NFL MVP, and Hall of Famer Steve Young gives readers an unprecedented and stunning inside look at what it takes to become a super-elite professional quarterback.
Steve Young produced some of the most memorable moments in NFL history. “The Run” – his electrifying 49-yard game-winning touchdown against Minnesota. “The Catch II” – his last-second touchdown strike to Terrell Owens to beat Green Bay in the playoffs. Then there was his record-setting, six touchdown passes in Super Bowl XXIX.
But Young’s most impressive victories were personal ones that were won off the field when no one was watching. QB is a remarkably revealing memoir of an athletically gifted Mormon boy with a 4.0 GPA, a photographic memory, and a severe case of childhood separation anxiety. At the same time, Young was absolutely fearless – and unstoppable -- whenever he had a ball in his hands.
As an eighth string quarterback at BYU, Young persevered through homesickness and a coach who said he’d never make it as a quarterback because he was a lefty who couldn’t throw. Determined to prove his coach wrong, Young became an All-American, finished second in the Heisman voting, and was the top draft choice coming out of college. After signing the largest contract in sports history, he was so overwhelmed by impossible expectations that he nearly walked away from football to become a lawyer. Instead, he ended up in San Francisco, pitted against Joe Montana in what became the greatest quarterback controversy in league history.
Young’s quest – both in football and in life – was always more about grit than anything. His “get it done” mentality brought MVP awards and Super Bowl championships to San Francisco. Asan author, he gives readers the sense of being inside his helmet while he runs through opponents both on and off the field.

Review
“Steve Young is a hero of mine, and his story is a source of inspiration for me. His perseverance, intelligence and most of all, grace under pressure NFL-style, makes this book a fascinating read. Thanks Steve for sharing your story with one of your biggest fans!”– Tom Brady

“All football fans know what a tremendously talented and successful quarterback Steve Young was in his NFL career. But what they don’t know about are the challenges and personal obstacles Steve had to overcome to make his dreams come true. This is a most exciting and compelling story.” – Roger Staubach

"There has never been a QB like Steve Young, and there has never been a football memoir quite like QB: A Life. Young's battles with anxiety make you forget you are reading about a Hall of Famer, and make you root for him at every turn. This is a revealing, honest, compelling book that any fan will enjoy." -- Michael Rosenberg, Senior Writer, Sports Illustrated

"Steve was not just another Hall of Fame QB - he was extraordinary in every facet of life. His passion, preparation, and attention to detail is so vivid you feel as though this "QB" has put you right in the middle of a huddle of life. I've never read a football book with more honesty and integrity - it's typical Steve. What a quarterback! What a man!" -- Jim Nantz, CBS Sports
“Steve Young’s scrambling, pinpoint passing, and perseverance helped make him an NFL Hall of Fame quarterback. He wowed us every Sunday. Until reading QB, though, I had no idea about the personal mountains he had to climb to make his dreams come true. This is a most memorable story for all fans.” – Chris Berman, ESPN
"Steve Young's QB: My Life Behind the Spiral reads like he used to play: with fearlessness, creativity and accomplishment. This is not a typical, self-serving athlete autobiography. Young is unflinchingly honest in detailing his battles with anxiety, serving as role model for far more than just staring down a fourth quarter blitz. It's a remarkable read." --Dan Wetzel, National Columnist, Yahoo! Sports
“This book is a terrific read.” --Jim Rome
“I couldn’t put it down.” --Brian Kilmeade
"The rare sports book in which the heretofore pristine hero admits to some legitimate human scars. I covered Young a lot in my life, and I never knew so much of what he went through. [This] book is gold.” --Peter King
“A candidly told, compelling, inspiring story that will enthrall even those who are not ardent football fans. It takes readers right into the huddle. The reader absorbs the sweat and pain, the exhilaration and tension.” --San Jose Mercury News
“Details his great football life …a remarkable story. An amazing saga.” --Mike Francesa
"Steve Young could endure hellacious on-field beatings, but one opponent made him weepy, nauseous and reluctant to get out of bed: anxiety...Even after he was voted the NFL's MVP, Young's performance anxiety spiked to nearly crushing levels, making him wonder if he'd survive certain seasons as he tried to replace Joe Montana....Young's gift for football, what he was seemingly made to do, could also make him physically ill...He is free [now], but realizes others are in the midst of the type of crisis he endured 23 years ago...For those,...his book is a gift from someone who truly understands." --Eric Branch, San Francisco Chronicle
"It would be just about impossible to make up Young's story of going from an eighth-string quarterback as a BYU freshman to the MVP of the NFL and then a first-ballot Hall of Famer. His book covers that football journey thoroughly, while also hitting all the life in between....QB succeeds in capturing a remarkable life, in and out of football." - Kurt Kragthorpe, The Salt Lake Tribune

Amazing book that I could not put down! It;s an instant all time favorite.
By backintheoc
What an awesome book! It has quickly become one of my all time favorites, and I am an avid reader. I absolutely loved learning more about Steve Young. His battle with anxiety was particularly helpful for me, as I have a child who also struggles with anxiety. It helped me understand more of what my own child is going through. Steve's humility is inspiring, and I loved the stories of the simple life he led. His tenacity is remarkable, and it was nice to get an inside peek at the injuries that NFL players deal with and play through on a daily basis. I was also super impressed by his wife and love the self confidence she displayed, and I'm so happy that he finally found what he was looking for. Another key takeaway from this book was how Steve handled retirement. He said he knew he would no longer be good at football, so he needed something else to be good at. This has stuck with me and is a great reminder to me as I transition through different times in my life.
I started by listening to the audio version, which is read by Steve himself. I think it adds so much when the author reads the book, and I really enjoyed listening to him. I liked it enough to also buy a hard copy of the book, and I couldn't put it down. What an awesome read.

Talk about endurance
By Tanya Parker Mills
I've always heard that football players play through pain, but this book was a real eye opener in terms of the amount and variety of pain they can play through. It's a miracle that he hasn't shown any effects from CTE. I pray that continues to be the case.
It was also refreshing to read about someone so successful having had to deal with anxiety all his life.

Fantastic Book by Steve Young with Jeff Benedict
By Clair
I am reading this book as I share this review. I have been a fan of Steve Young since 1980. I have watched every football game he has been in that was possible for me to see. I have so much memorabilia show casing his years in collegiate and professional football. For some reason, I have not only been drawn to his exceptional talents and skills as a football player but also his integrity, character, and faith-driven attributes which lifted him head and shoulders above so many professional athletes who appeared solely caught up in their lofty self-opinion. I have read and kept many articles about him, and my family, through the years, have shared in my admiration of him and his many talents.
This book is written from the heart. He expresses, with admirable honesty, the challenges he faced throughout his life which tormented him and almost emotionally paralyzed him Yet, he found the strength and determination to rise above his constraints and become a great athlete and a great man.
I am mesmerized by his honesty, his achievements, and his trust in Deity to guide him through the torments and disappointments of his amazing efforts and ultimately help him reach his Mount Everest.
I so love this book. I am eternally thankful that he has made the choice to share his private struggles and triumphs with those of us who are his greatest of fans and admirers. What a great gift he offers to us who have followed his life for 36 years, or more, like I have. He really is the impetus behind my acquisition of a unabashed love for the game as a fan of great athletes who demonstrate similar levels of integrity and devotion to their craft. He will always be a hero to me, and this book will take the place on my bookshelf as a treasured and valued reminder of this great man and all he has accomplished and stands for. Thank you for the many years of excitement, enjoyment, nervous tension, anxiety, and inspiration you generated for us, your fans, Steve. I always wanted to meet you and thank you for the years of joy and pleasure you brought into our home. Blessings to your sweet family and yourself, always.
I love this book. Read it. Treasure it. Share it with your young impressionable youth. Let them see that challenges, if faced with courage, determination, commitment, character, and integrity, can bring great things into their lives. Can you imagine the power that would be wrought in a new generation of deserving youth? If you pass up reading this book, you will have lost a powerful opportunity to change the path and course of your life.
